if your plant has a waxy pseudostem does it mean its an edible variety?

Wax doesn't determine edibility. Some edible varieties have wax, some don't. Some seeded varieties have wax too, such as musa thomsonii.

I guess that is not what I have then. I thought it was but it has a really waxy look to it. When I get my camera back from the shop I will take a few pictures of the small plant. The big one I have already put under the house. I am glad though because it might be an edible type.

Look at the midribs and petioles. If the midrib is redish above and the petioles have "wings" (extention of leaves) then it's basjoo.

I have never seen a basjoo with a waxy stem.

The midrib is a pink on the mother plant, but I don't see what I would call wings on the petioles, of course I might not really understand what you mean. The pup has a darker pink midrib with a pink line all the way around the outside of the leaf. This plant I have in a pot. I don't think the plants I planted in the ground had the pink midrib but I can't say for sure right now.

It would be funny if it was, because I just asked a couple of days ago if someone would want to part with Ice Cream pups. I will post a picture when I get my camera back. It should be 5 to 10 business days.

Ok, I finally got my camera back. These are the pictures of the plant.









This is the pup attached to the plant.



I had one just like it planted in the ground over the summer. It was about eight feet tall when I dug it up. The leaves were further apart on that on than the one in the photo. Also at the base it had more pink. The pups have pink on the midrib, but the leaves become all green when the plant gets larger.


I traded one of the pups for this plant.









I have no idea what type either one is. If anyone can help that would be great.

Paul Odin must be more like the all-knowing norse god, Odin. Fits ice-cream's description perfectly in the first photos.

Definately not m. basjoo. The other one you traded looks like it could be a sword-sucker of either dwarf cavendish or grand naine. I'm guessing this because of the fat trunk, low stature, black markings, and relatively skinny leaves (sword sucker trait).

I like your tiles BTW.

Sword-sucker = a "good sucker", as opposed to "Water-sucker". A Sword-sucker usually has narrow and skinny leaves, almost no leaves at first. A water or "Umbrella sucker" has very wide leaves and are said to be useless for planting because of lack of vigour. So beware when buying on e-bay!

I agree with mrbungalow on the first one. Not only does the whole plant look identical to my Ice Cream banana, it has black pepper markings like my Ice Cream banana does. Look where the leaf meets the pseudostem.
The sucker shows the dark midrib like a sucker on mine, too.
The plant and pup both have a striking resemblence to Ice Cream.
When it flowers you'll have a better idea. It's only a matter of time

I went out earlier and checked the water pup on my Ice Cream, it has a thin pink edge surrounding the leaves.
As the plant gets larger, it looses this.
