Re: What happened?
Hi Mitchel, Erik had us delete all his Hawaiian banana threads. It was not something we wanted to do but there was some conflict of interest. I can tell you it involved a book being published where Erik feels he shared more info than he should have. It was a really tough call but in the end the threads were removed.
Nothing was posted yet in the regards to explain the situation, you beat Erik and myself to it, but I did ask that Erik post something explaining, in his words, where the threads went, and why. I hope no feelings were hurt by those that participated in those threads, I just wrote a PM the size of a book to Gabe about how upset I am about me deleting them. There was one post with attached pictures that was split off into it's own thread so those pics would not be lost, but that's all I could salvage. There's a lot of mystery when it comes to Hawaiian bananas, I thought most all of it was left back in ancient times, but apparently some of it still persists. I don't know how to explain it, but the whole situation is just odd. Please understand it was not something I wanted to do, but please trust my judgement about doing it. Erik should return here once he feels better about it and we can get back to talking about all his wonderful knowledge of the Hawaiian bananas. In his words, he's "crawled under a rock" for a bit, even taken time off of work, and is cooling off. Strange but true. Sorry.

Re: What happened?
Ahh man, I was really enjoying his posts! Did he ever answer my question? Gabe sort skirted around what I asked.
Well, whatever the case I hope it all works out for him and he doesn't loose too much sleep. |

Re: What happened?
He talked about how the ancients had bananas that had changed over the years and become specific to that area. He mentioned that the Brazillians had become known as Santa Catarina and that the Rachis looked different from the Brazilians. I just want to figure out if my bananas that were brought to California by a local marine biologist on his boat were possibly Santa Catarina's and if those are one of the plants that evolved or were selectively breed by the ancients in Hawaii.
I'm going to make it really clear this time! My Hawaiian Apples that have the nickname of Orange Sherbet came from the Islands and were hand delivered via a private boat. How can I tell if they are Santa Catarina? BTW, If need to remove this post that's fine but in that case could someone please pm me with the reason and any info about my plants. Thanks |

Re: What happened?
sorry i didnt address your question earlier mitchell, i had a good hunch but wanted to make sure. as far as i can tell, Brazillian and Santa Catarina (Santa Ana...other names too) are listed all as synonyms of each other. I suppose there could be some slight variations between different clones, but they seem to generally regarded as all the same. In any case, it is not one of the original Hawaiian bananas, it was introduced in modern times.

Re: What happened?
Cool, now I can stop thinking about it. The article you posted also says Brazilians and Hawaiian Apples are the same.

Re: What happened?
OK, now I'm confused.
We have 2 apples - the large type from Mitchel he calls Hawaiian and the smaller Manzano here in S FL. But the hawaiian aren't hawaiian but Brazilian? So then what are the manzano? Terry |

Re: What happened?
The way I'm seeing it is that you have Tall Brazilian and Dwarf Brazilian. There are no Apples, that is just another name for the same plants regardless where they come from. Right Gabe?

Re: What happened?
banana names are a headache! all of the names you hear are correct, over here on the mainland they are called 'Brazillian', over in Hawaii they are called 'Apple' or 'Santa Catarina'. They are both correct, it just depends on where you are. To make matters worse, over here we already have an 'Apple' which is different from the Hawaiian 'Apple'. Our 'Apple' can also be called 'Manzano'.
So in Hawaii you may call what we call 'Brazillian' either 'Apple' or 'Santa Catarina', or 'Santa Catarina Ana' (probly a few other names too). And what we call 'Apple' in for example, California, would probly be called 'Manzano' in Hawaii, not 'Apple' since they already have a different 'Apple'. Over here could call 'Manzano' either that or 'Apple', since we already designate the Hawaiian 'Apple' as 'Brazillian'.

Re: What happened?
Hmmm...sorry to see those threads gone! They were some of the neatest pictures I've ever seen on this site. I hope Erik's not getting into any trouble over this. Are the Hawai'in Gods angry or something (just kidding)? Erik, hope you come back soon and share some more of those great pictures please!

Re: What happened?
If you drink hemp beer or hemp wine, Gabe's answer is perfectly clear.
