Orinoco bunch at 14 feet - T namwa bloom and second flag at 11 feet
Namwah was sold as IceCream from Nursery - Think it is Namwah - can anyone verify?? Thanks

I probably don't apply often enough - I make my own fert... using the mixing link on this site - should result in 25-5-30 mixed from 10-10-10 and a high nitrogen fert.
Also a water soluable from MG and k-mag also should be 25-5-30.
Don't have a set schedule but try to fert monthly or more often .
Also use pony poop alot.

I just learned from abshreck that he uses lots more than I do.
Can you recommend a fert feeding schedule - I wouldn't mind larger bunches after waiting so long for a bloom...

First off, congratulations on the bloom Jose! It's a job well done.

I'm wondering if the purple banding under the fingers really indicate it's a Namwah?

I ask because you say see in the photos below that some of my banana bunches also have similar markings, so if that's the case I'm not sure the coloring is limited to Namwahs alone.

(Although to be fair, I have no idea what type of banana this plant is lol)

As to the fert schedule, I can't say much being an irregular fertilzer myself, but I can tell you that bananas are absolute gluttons when it comes to getting fed. There's always the potential to overfertilize if you apply too much of the chemical at one time (so I'll wait for an expert to comment on that) but you can unashamedly pump the mats full of organic stuff like horse poop pretty heavily, and they'll just love you all the more for it, not to mention give bigger bunches

Nice Blooms yourself -What are they? Yours have color on both ends, I don't know what that means variety wise. I hope more experienced folks share a fertilizer plan. My bunch does look sparse by comparison.

Thank you, those pictures are from my first banana plant that ever bloomed, a banana I had gotten from an uncle on another island and one that I'd been raising for a year, hoping it would flower before I left for college abroad that fall. Turns out it did

Unfortunately I haven't the slightest notion what the variety is lol. I've been told by Rob Guzz and Momese and the like that the visual characteristics seem similar to something in the ABB genome group (think relatively stocky fruit like Namwahs and Orinocos) but they haven't been able to reach a definite conclusion. My parents had to pick this bunch a bit early (while I was still in school) because it was leaning badly and I think had fallen over (they didn't know they would still ripen on the plant lol) so they cooked most of the fingers green, so I'm not sure if they're sweet or not lol.

You have a gorgeous equestrian setup, the local horse farm is one of my favourite places to visit since I always leave loaded with bags of organic goodness I think before I go back to college in two weeks I'll try to smother the weeds in my garden with a ton of seaweed (which by the way is largely responsible for those many fingers you see, used tons of it before) and then will cover the lot of it with manure and hope for the best

Leaning over and falling over is problem #1 for my real Ice Creams. None of my namwahs, tall or dwarf, lean. My namwah with a 65lb bunch barely leaned while my Ice Creams nearly always fall over on their own once they're 5 feet tall. I'm almost certain from those photos you posted previously that they were Ice Creams.

Glad to hear I'm not alone! (although I'm sorry the problem plagues you too lol)

Hopefully that means that unidentified mat is indeed an Ice Cream

The annoying thing with my *hopeful* Ice Creams is that many of them grow slightly off-vertical so that when they do bear bunches they end up slowly leaning further and further over the course of months till they fall. I wonder if propping the plants as they grow to force them straight up might solve the problem?


Also, thanks very much for your help in id'ing the plant. I appreciate the mental work, head scratching, and visual comparison you and other growers put in to help us newbies find out whatever it is that we're trying to keep alive

You should be able to upload your pics to photobucket. No needto buy a camera unless you just want a new one-- then it is smple to paste the image URL directly to your post instead of to your gallery..

Hey Bo ---- Hope the DN give usable fruit before cold snaps. You could try a professional trick to get harvestable fruit earlier - like Nick does. As soon as the 5th hand emerges (bract peels back a bit) do a bunch prune. Cut the flower stalk off right under the 5th hand. Nick gets bigger fingers and harvests earlier on his Dwarf Super Plantains that way. I have done it too - it works.

So the decision is ---- some fruit, or no fruit!

BTW did your Pisang Klotek grow for you or did Charles keep it himself? lol Dan
