Thanks for the weevil info, I'm lucky that the Morado is resistant to weevils and so far the Verdin appears to be also. I actually planted the Verdin in a weevil infested ARH corm, it was easier than adding compost.
Thanks Keith, I wish I knew more about the reds or what specific variant this is. Everyone here just calls them Tall Red or Cuban Red if they aren't clearly Dwarf Reds. Where I live is pretty dry (for this area, only 75" of rain last year) and ones I've seen just a few miles away where they get almost double that they seem to be much more vigorous, taller, thicker stemmed even with no care. The bunch is puny. Only 4 hands and now putting out male flowers.

My Dwarf Red has been much faster growing with many pups, but still no flower after 2.5 years. Thought it started to choke 6 months ago after a very dry summer but it still putting out new growth extremely slowly while the pups are close to overtaking the original p-stem in height.

Raja Puri back in Los Angeles. I'll get to see it on Saturday when I fly home. Unfortunately it doesn't look very big. At least I get to harvest this time though.

I surely wish it was. But that Raja Puri has about 5' of p-stem. In person it probably looks really small for a banana bloom.

Rob, here you go. This is what I have as FHIA-18. I have no reason to doubt this ID (though I'd be hard pressed to distinguish it from FHIA-01). The bud is long at emergence (first bract was 27") and narrow, but seriously fattens up. The picture of the first bract that was covering fruit (bract 3) gives you an idea of just how big the inflorescence of this variety is -- massive. The p-stem is very thick at base, too.

Came to me as Jamaican Lacatan, but doesn't seem tall enough. Also had no sigatoka even though all nearby Cavendish types had it.

Yet another banana that turned out to be a Namwah. This seems more of the Misi Luki size, rather than the very tall size. Bought this as a "Kru" from a local seller who had never even heard of Krus being red. I think this is now the 5th type of banana sold as something else that turned out to be a Namwah for me. Good thing I like them!

Yes, for me the misidentified ones have usually been Namwah or Pome. Just had the first harvest of one that was supposed to be Manzano, but was actually a Pome ("Brazilian" type). I have 4 plants that weren't supposed to Namwah but are, plus a couple Pome varieties that were supposed to be something else (+ 2 that were). End result, I lot less variety than I was aiming for! But at least they are varieties that do well here.

How long does it take your GN from bud to harvest? I like how cavendish or GM varieties have a little yellow/orange colour in their bracts.

Hi Ed,

in HZ6 The grand main is firmly outside of my reach. However, I am intrigued by
that frog in your avatar. I believe, that I have seen a similar frog in you Flickr site,
but I do not remember it as quite as colourful. Do you have a special line on these
critters?

On another matter, I am trying to start a new thread since a few days now, but
I can not figure out how.

I had stored the URL for the procedure in my computer, but when changing from
Windows XP to Windows 7, it got lost. I cannot find it in this website either. so,
PLEASE, you have helped me out before, if you can get me on the right track, I will
appreciate it, especially since I have posted that request in other threads. and
also emailed it to the admin twice without getting any response.

Thanks,
Olaf

Well I wondered why my Maia 'Upehupehu's cigar leaf was coming out so slowly. Noticed something was busting out 2/3rds of the way up the p-stem. On closer inspection, it was the flower. Did a little surgery and we'll see. There was no way it was going to make it up out of the top of the p-stem. In the ground just over a year.

My Musa Sikkimensis has Bloomed here in Maryland. See my new postings
Banana Gallery - thestockmann Gallery
Does anyone know what happens to a tree which has no leaves when it blooms?
Does the tree produce any more leaves once it is blooming?
Will the bananas mature?
This tree also had no roots while it was stored indoors but should have some now after being in soil for 3 weeks.

My post-op 'Upehupehu seems to be working it out. Should be able to tell soon if this plant is the real thing (with more stout Iholena fruit) or is actually an Iholena Lele, which I was told it might also be. This pup was collected in the wild in a remote part of North Kohala.
