When to harvest banana stems?
Hello. Living in Zone 5, just about the only banana i could grow here is basjoo. Even then, i would have to cut it down at the end of the season and mulch it. So i was wondering, at what point in the growth of the banana do you get the edible banana "heart," the inside of the pseudo stem? most sources say that it is after flowering, but is this just because they don't want to sacrifice a plant before it gives fruit or something? If the banana doesn't have to flower, then at least i could get something to eat at the end of the season.

Re: When to harvest banana stems?
I hope someone answers you because I'd like to see what they say. I didn't know that part of the psten was edible. How do you prepare it?

Re: When to harvest banana stems?
There are some good recipes online that you can check out, if you search long enough. the edible part is in the very center of the plant, but i don't know if it is just part of the pstem or if it is the actual stalk of the flower after blooming. if it is just part of the pstem, then the plant doesn't need to flower to be able to get it.
