Default Who's growing/grown Saba?

I would love to see some pictures of this Banana-if you have some and would post pics..that would be great!

I would also love to know how much these will grow planted in ground outside in a year-are they super fast considering their ultimate size?

Thanks in advance-not much longer until Banana weather!

Hi Jim - can't help you in your area as I am tropical - but here are some photos.

They do grow large with about 20ft of stem before the first leaf - they are big and I grow them just for the look of them - the fruit is moderate!

Hey jim
I think I have some photos in my gallery, if you care to take a look. I may try to post some pics from last year in the members section if I can. I am working in Brazil and reception is pretty bad here but I'll be home on the weekend, maybe I can post some then

Saba takes a year and a half to pop fruit, m/m. They are best if eaten plumped, green. That's another 3-4 months.
I don't grow them for fruit anymore - just for pups for sale or auction.

My saba was a tc when I got it. I think it's about 10 feet tall now. I received it fall of 2009 and put it out in the yard over the summer.

I have two mats of Saba, one has a pseudostem shooting now. This picture was taken more then a week ago. I'll get another soon. Given the long grow time before shooting I prefer other cultivars that shoot sooner and can be used as fresh fruit or plantains.

I hope this helps.

I posted these pics earlier in a thread called "My Nanners".

Here is a young Saba that is about 2 ft high, and has been growing for about two weeks in this pic.

Here is another Saba that had been planted about 10 months in this pic.

Same Saba from a different angle. When mature, it will be taller than the Apple banana behind it. The fence to the left is 6 ft high.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

Part of my main question is....considering their ultimate size,do these grow as fast as
a Basjoo or Black Thai?,both of which I have found to move it,move it!!!

In my experience Saba grows quickly, but not as fast as Thai Black. It took last years extremely tough winter.

Here in Dallas, my saba grew back from in ground roots in last spring april 2013 and oct23 2013; it has about 3 inches of plantain bananas since last oct2013. Unfortunately it will freeze Wednesday morning 11/12/13 so I wont get to see it ripe :-(.
