Seeds for Key Lime
I am on the lookout for some Key Lime seeds. The only limes we get here on the island are the persian limes, and I would like to grow another sort. I seem to remember that this time of year is the fruiting time for key limes, so if anyone could let me have a few seeds, I would be grateful - supermarket fruit is fine btw.
Thanks Cassie |

Re: Seeds for Key Lime
Persian or Bearss Lime are seedless. There are seeds once in a while, like out of 500 fruits, you might get one.
I have Tavares limequat, and it has some seeds. It is as good as a lime, plus you can eat the rinds too. I might be too late for that as some friends harvested them, perhaps they overlooked some fruit. My Mary Ellen lime hasn't fruited yet. I have Giant Mexican Key Lime, but it is still a bud, hasn't sprouted yet, but it might die this winter. So I can't help you this year, perhaps, remind me around September next year when I usually harvest my first batches of limequats. I have bearss lime almost year round but they are seedless. |

Re: Seeds for Key Lime
Thanks JoeReal, both for the information and the offer of seeds. Anytime you have any seeds other than persian lime - I would be so happy to receive them as very few different varieties are available here. I will try to remember to contact you next September.
I have taken many cuttings from my Meyers lemon and passed them around locally as few lemons are available here and they are never available in the markets (apparently they grow them for export only in the centre of the island). Citrus grow well here but the varieties grown (outside the commercial operations) are very poor and really not worth it. The oranges available locally are terrible - sour and dry. I can't understand why the better varieties haven't filtered down to the ordinary folk - so anything that I can grow that is a better variety I pass on to any Dominican who is interested in growing fruit of a good standard. Our gardeners now have a thriving plot filled with good bananas - and as soon as the lemons are big enough to take care of themselves - they can have some of those too. I also have a number of pink grapefruit seedlings that I will be passing around - these things should be more available here! Thanks for your interest Cassie |

Someone is kindly sending me some key lime seeds as we speak, so I should have some seedlings soon.

Re: Seeds for Key Lime
Taylor - I was planning on doing just that - he has a lot of persian limes, pink and normal grapefruit and lemons (rare for here). But with 8 acres I'm sure he can squeeze in a few key limes.

Thats great Cassie! I'm sure they will love it, and I bet you will get some of the harvest in a few years, too.

Re: Seeds for Key Lime
I'm going to grow lots of plants for him - he won't be building a house there but making the finca into a botanical garden/recreation area and roasting local coffee beans to drink etc.

Re: Seeds for Key Lime
Island Cassie . . . There is a tree just over the hill from me that has small sweet Limes, I think identical to Key Limes and probably are the same. I will collect some in the next few days and list them on my web-site for sale. They will be listed as Key Limes untill I may find out they are the same or a different variety. Send me an address and I will mail seeds to you (free). "who cares about a dollar or two when it may begin a new friendship!
However . . . I sell starters/liners wholesale to the growers here in Puerto Rico and since I really enjoy trading and helping others to find plants, I have started a seperate retail "real cheap" priced web price list. For a couple years I sent plants all over the states and the world free untill it began to cost mucho, much dinero. I still have a soft spot in my butt for people in need and always include unexpected extra "stuff" with any purchase. Copy site name and visit when you have time. plantcollectors. net Love the Earth, Logos

Re: Seeds for Key Lime
Mskitty - I don't know what variety of coffee they grow here - the brand I buy doesn't say and I don't recall seeing it on any other brand. But I will look next time I go to the store.

Re: Seeds for Key Lime
Logos - sorry for the delay in replying but a truck took out some poles and we have been without the internet while they recabled!
That is a very kind offer of lime seeds - thank you - but can I wait just a little while as all of Marks seeds have germinated and I am a little pushed for space. Just looked at your website and you have some nice plants there - a number are also common here but I will keep checking for new additions. Good job! Cassie |
