Tissue Culturing & Other Propagation Techniques of Banana Plants This forum is for discussing propagation techniques of banana plants. Tissue culturing is the popular process of creating clones from a source plant. There are other techniques to propagate banana plants however, such as nicking corms or dividing corms. Tissue Culture Workshop Interest
Just wanted to get some idea as to the number of people interested in a Tissue Culture workshop put on by Carol Stiff's organization - Kitchen Culture Kits.
We are planning to hold it in Las Vegas and were thinking of March. We need to determine how many would likely attend. They usually cost about $100-115 per person for the workshop including all materials, supplies, lunch and so on. This is lower if some of the expense can be reduced. I will host the workshop in my office, shuttle the instructor back and forth to the airport and perhaps get her motel room 'comped' by a casino. If you belong to any gardening or orchid clubs, spread the word and let me know how many can make it. The more people we have, the lower the cost....so please encourage all you can. I haven't asked him yet, but Pauly (damaclese) is a chef by trade, so we will have a great lunch that is much better and less expensive than a catered box lunch (if he will consent to preparing it for us.) Carol said that she would do 2 workshops if need be to accomodate everyones schedule. I would think we can set it up for a Saturday. If you have ever wanted to learn about micropropagation TC'ing, now is your chance. Should March be bad timing, please give us your input on an alternate time frame and Carol will do her best to make it happen. We could have it before the end of the year too. |

I am sure that she would do one for you too. She is a member here, so PM her. Her HQ is in Southern Wisconsin, so it isn't that far to go.

Re: Tissue Culture Workshop Interest
Anyone interested in the workshop? Carol Stiff will be the hostess and this is a great opportunity to learn TC techniques.

Re: Tissue Culture Workshop Interest
Hey, Scot, I just saw this thread now and I'd be interested. I've been a lurker at Carol's Yahoo group and have wished something would get scheduled for northern California, but Las Vegas could work for me. Are lodging rates better these days with the slow economy? Getting there and back would probably be my biggest expense but I'm still interested.
Thanks, Harvey |

Re: Tissue Culture Workshop Interest
Harvey, glad you are interested. If we get enough people, it will be cheap to attend.
Yes, rates are dropping all over as they struggle to fill the rooms. I would try one of the comparison services, like Priceline, Hotels.com, Orbitz, etc. |

Re: Tissue Culture Workshop Interest
Okay, thanks. I saw on the group that something else was being talked about in March. Do you have an idea of the time of month just so I could pencil something in? Has nobody else expressed an interest yet?

Re: Tissue Culture Workshop Interest
I also would like to attend the seminar. Is it banana specific, or will there be other plants discussed as well? March is good for me, as I'd be riding in on my motorcycle (I go everywhere by bike), unless some of us Callee-fornee-inns can put together a carpool/vanpool and split the costs. Whatya think Harvey? Maybe set up a couple pickup zones as we head down the valley.
Just a thought... |

Re: Tissue Culture Workshop Interest
Sure, I can drive. My pickup only gets about 16mpg right now, but I've got a locking shell on the back and racks on top in case we pick up some prizes along the way. Gas is cheap now again! I'd even be willing to swing by LA, Riverside, or something like that, as long as it makes sense, though that is a bit out of the way. I just need to make sure it works out okay with my wife's work schedule.
Scot, are you planning on it probably being a weekend? How long are Carol's workshops, typically. I would want to be able to go to Mass on Sunday. |

Re: Tissue Culture Workshop Interest
The cool thing about it is that Carol has left open the scheduling, so give me some idea of your preferences. We need more people to attend, so please help me promote this.
Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide. |

Re: Tissue Culture Workshop Interest
Okay, I'll post it in a couple of forums, but most people that I think would be interested are already in this forum. I don't think most forum members visit this part of the forum and wonder how many people have read these posts. Some local gardening clubs might be one avenue of greater exposure.
Thanks, Harvey |

Please try to give some ideas on timing for this workshop, so I can ask Carol to set aside the dates for us to maximize attendance. If March is good for most everyone, we can set-it up. Pick a week and also lmk what days of the week work out best. Thanks for helping. |

March 14th or 21st work for me but not the 7th or 28th, if you were still thinking of a Saturday.
