Banana Seed Germination Forum As one of the toughest seeds in the plant kingdom to figure out the keys to germination success with, this is a forum with banana seed germination tips. Please entitle posts like "Musa balbisiana," or "Musa cheesmani," etc. People would then post a reply under that heading, sharing their germination successes (and failures), what materials and methods they used, germination percentage, etc.

Joy Darjeeling banana Sprouting!!!!

My fist banana poked through the soil today!!!! I'm so happy, i really didn't think any would sprout. I just have them outside in a covered 3 gallon pot with seed starter mix. The pot is in my lanai/screen room outside and gets some sun during the morning and evening. Temps have been in the high 90s during the day and about 78ish at night. I'm so fricking happy!!!!!!

Congrats on the seed AmberNichole. Maybe I'm keeping some of mine on the dry side.

How long did the Sikkimensis take to sprout?? I just had a Musa Velutina come up today. Im happy as hell because i put the seeds in there Jan. 3rd....So it was almost 6 months. I was just getting ready to throw them out and try something else and when i took the lid off i was shocked to finally see some growth.

Hasn't been long. I just looked and the seeds were shipped from California on May 10th. I think I got them on the 12th so that makes 18 days? I have 10 of the Velutina, but I have yet to see one of them come up. I guess I'll keep doing what I'm doing and see what happens. On the package they came in it says the Sikkimensis can take 6-12 months and the Velutina can take 3-6 months. Since i'm in an already tropical climate i think that might help.

Well the little guy isn't doing so good. The tip is turning brown and it's not growing like it was. Any thoughts why and can it be saved?

Maybe 'damping off' because it's to wet.

is it salvageable? I have only watered it once since i re-potted it. But the dirt is staying moist. Not sopping wet, but moist.

Stop watering ASP and put it under "bell". Any glass or transparent plastic will do the job. Baggy too.
Good luck

I'd say let it get some air.

its it a pot outside in my screen room without a cover at the moment. It was doing great doubling in size every day then one day the tip started to turn brown.

So i should take it out and put it in a baggy? I can put a plastic thing over the pot, but wouldn't that add to the moisture?

Sorry just want to save the litte guy! lol

I wouldn't add moisture by putting the plastic myself. I tend to think if you reduce the watering, and allow a little air circulation it may be survivable.

should i bring it inside? Outside it it super hot and humid and i think thats why the soil is staying damp even though i have only watered it once. If i brought it inside it should dry out faster (with the AC being a de-humidifier and all)

That's a good question. To bad you can't mix perlite into the soil. I'd say leave it outside, just water if dry. Let the upper part of the soil try to dry out. If you bring it in in the a/c it may complicate things.

I could add something to the soil, but would disturbing the plant cause more problems? I have peat moss or sand. I also am making my husband pick up some Vermiculite today.

If I were to add anything it would be perlite. Vermiculite might keep it moist. I'd be careful because the plant is so small.

Nicole, the rains as you've noticed has been inland and not here near the coast, yet. You are right about the plastic cover, but put it on the North side of your house so it is shaded in the hotest part of the day. If you have a good potting soil you will not need to add perlite or vermiculite, it is the desicating sun and dry wind (no rain) that is hurting the plant. This should help.
