Banana Seed Germination Forum As one of the toughest seeds in the plant kingdom to figure out the keys to germination success with, this is a forum with banana seed germination tips. Please entitle posts like "Musa balbisiana," or "Musa cheesmani," etc. People would then post a reply under that heading, sharing their germination successes (and failures), what materials and methods they used, germination percentage, etc. |

Dwarf Variegated Musa Seeds
I bought these seeds off eBay. They are supposed to be Dwarf Variegated Musa from Cambodia. They were only THREE seeds per auction - I paid for 6, but only received 3. I notified the seller, we'll see what happens. They do appear to be fresh and they are banana seeds, so that is a plus!
I filed all three and soaked in Superthrive, I have two of the seeds started in the AeroGarden and one in seed starter soil. As they arrived on 2/22/11: Seed #1 in the AeroGarden 3/3/11 Seed #2 in the AeroGarden 2/27/11 3/3/11 Seed #3 This is in the starter soil banana seed in the background 3/3/11 ~JaNan

Re: Dwarf Variegated Musa Seeds
Those are Ensete seeds. Possibly what they call E. 'Kluay Pa', but hard to be sure. Too small for regular E. superbum though. Variegated, eh? Did they have a picture of the mother plant?

Re: Dwarf Variegated Musa Seeds
That's a fishy-looking auction. The banana pictured is Musa 'Ae Ae', but the small plants certainly don't look like a Musa to me at all...looks like a couple of green Ensete sprouting in that pot, and two strange-looking plants that could be Ensete, but not sure. Not sure about that "variegation" either...very strange-looking. Good luck with sprouting them though, and let us know how they turn out!

Re: Dwarf Variegated Musa Seeds
Thanks Frank, I will! You guys will be the first to know believe me. Varig8 and I have been keeping tabs on this guy. He thinks he may be a dishonest seller that used to go by another name. I have a weakness for variegated plants, so I had to give it a try anyway. If it is - GREAT, if not another lesson learned! ~J

Re: Dwarf Variegated Musa Seeds
Thanks Dean, John, and Sherry!
J J J, I paid the buy it now price times two plus shipping. I am kind of worried about this seed: Where the bulging area is - that is not the belly button where the roots and growth start from. That is the filed area. (you can click on the picture and click again to see it really close) I am not sure what to make of it. Has anyone else had this issue, and if so, what happened? ~JaNan

Re: Dwarf Variegated Musa Seeds
You filed them? That's mould then, sorry. That's happened to every single seed I've filed. It let's all sorts of nastyness into the seed and kills it.

Re: Dwarf Variegated Musa Seeds
I have not had a mold issue with seeds I have filed before, so I hope that is not the case. It almost seems to be a hair like root coming out from it on the bottom of the "swollen" area. I am taking pictures nearly daily of it so I will be able to watch it very closely. ~J

Re: Dwarf Variegated Musa Seeds
Hi Dar! Here are a couple of pictures from this morning. I don't see much change, but on a positive note - they haven't dried up. I have two of them in the AeroGarden and one in a seed starting dome. The AG seeds are right in the middle - that is sprouting pepper seeds around them.
This one is right above the mango seed: Thanks for asking! ~JaNan

Re: Dwarf Variegated Musa Seeds
I think that if it really was an Ae Ae, it would not have seeds. Also, I think the variegation in Ae Ae varies. If yours comes up green, that is probably what the seller will tell you to attmpt to stall you and make you go away. Just based on your description of the sale costing you more than what it should, I already think the seller is a dishonest scammer.
A few years back, I saw some items for sale on eBay that I knew were fraudulent. I attempted to inform eBay about it, and was pretty much stonewalled. If I had purchased something that was fraudulent, then they would have allowed me to make a complaint; but if you have not made a purchase (which I wouldn't since I ALREADY knew the item was bogus), they don't give a rip. Seems to me that all eBay really cares about is getting their $$, and everything else is just noise to them. Last edited by Yug : 03-25-2011 at 07:37 PM. |

Re: Dwarf Variegated Musa Seeds
Thanks Sherry, you know I will! Yug, I know they are not Ae. I am hoping for a variegated dwarf, if not there will be someone here that can tell me what they are.
eBay has it good and bad points, as do most businesses. I have been a buyer and seller (I do not sell plants) on eBay for over 11 years with 100% positive feedback. I have been able to buy a lot of very unusual things that aren't available to me here locally. So I take my chances! My Dad was stationed in Hawaii (Marine) when I was very young and have been enamored with tropical vegetation ever since. So I can blame him! So, it has become a quest to get the most unusual tropicals I can and attempt to grow them here in Central Texas. ~JaNan

Re: Dwarf Variegated Musa Seeds
The mango seed reminds me of a beetle with the horns. LOL
But anyways, way awesome. Congrats. I can't wait to see what they will turn out to be. Hopefully it really is variegated. I'm crossing my fingers... |
