Banana Seed Germination Forum As one of the toughest seeds in the plant kingdom to figure out the keys to germination success with, this is a forum with banana seed germination tips. Please entitle posts like "Musa balbisiana," or "Musa cheesmani," etc. People would then post a reply under that heading, sharing their germination successes (and failures), what materials and methods they used, germination percentage, etc.

Joy First seed is coming through

I have been growing bananas for a year now and this is my first try at growing from seed and my first seed has broken through and looks lovely and greeny/white. How long or how big do you let it grow before moving it. It is a snow banana Ensete glaucum I have another 4 seeds yet to sprout but i am really excited now!! I have lots of Musa velutina seeds waiting to but it toke 2 weeks for my ensete glaucum to come through.
I would be greatful if someone with some experience could let me know when to move them etc they are in quite a large pot at the moment see pic below, sorry not very good quality but you can just make out the stem coming through.

Thanks

Yippeee!! Congrats on your sprout! I'm waiting on some to come up too..it's been only one week for them. Do you have your seeds inside under a light or outside in sunlight?

my seeds are literally in a tray by the window, the soils is just a compost mixed with sharp sand to aid drainage and i have been spraying them when they have dried up. It taken 2 weeks to get this one through but heres hoping on the others. The other i did was to place them outside last night so it was cool as i have read that it is the temp change that kick starts germination. There are kept at about 20-24 degrees on the windos sill. I will put them out again tonight so that hopfully the others will start too. Good luck with yours.

Good work! I have had fairly good success on germinating many types of banana (and other plant) seeds in the last few years.
Raising banana plants from seed is like caring for an extra kid around the house. My advice would be to keep them out of direct sun, spray often with a fungicide, mist with a watering bottle (to water) that contains a light fertilizer mix, ALWAYS ensure good drainage, let them get fairly large (almost too big for the pot) before transplanting, never let them get completely dry and be prepared to accept a few loses.
The last tip is the hardest! Sometimes you can have 25 of the same plant lined up on the same shelf, doing the exact same thing to them and one dies for unknown reasons.
Good luck on your seeds - and if you're like me, I know you probably already have a bunch more on your wish list.

Jay

I hope my seeds will get a start now that I've set them outside on the porch for several nights now too. Hope the rest of your seeds will sprout. It will be alot of fun to see them popping up out of the soil.

Pinwheel Re: First seed is coming through

All of kind time of day! marksbananas I congratulate you on young shoots! I too have grown up the majority of bananas from seeds. This hour at me has appeared small Musa sikkimensis from seed. Here a photo.

And before there have ascended seeds Musa acuminata. On my big surprise 8 from 8!!! Probably seeds have got fresh. I have replaced them at once as there were some shoots in one pot. Sat down in one pot as did not know that there will be such result. They had not time to show even the first leaf. After change any was not lost. The truth growth at all different, someone develops more quickly, and someone is more silent. And it is better to wait certainly the beginning of good growth, let will show sheets 8, and will be then normal to replace. Success!
