Banana Seed Germination Forum As one of the toughest seeds in the plant kingdom to figure out the keys to germination success with, this is a forum with banana seed germination tips. Please entitle posts like "Musa balbisiana," or "Musa cheesmani," etc. People would then post a reply under that heading, sharing their germination successes (and failures), what materials and methods they used, germination percentage, etc. |

Germination!!!
15 days After planting 100 E. Ventricosum and 100 E. Superbum (Thai) I have 2 EV and 2 bums coming up. I'm super excited and my wife thinks I'm nuts. I used 72 cell flats for both and the ones that were left over I put in plastic tupperware containers. I mixed miracle gro sphagnum moss and perlite as my media. I've basically taken all the advice I've read from here and put it all together. The only thing I did different was I kept one flat of superbums on alternating temp cycles (93 F during day and 70 during night) and the other container of superbums and all EVs I kept on constant 85 F. Interesting thing about the superbums is one came up from the alternating temps and one came up from constant temp at the same time. I've mostly read ensetes like constant but I also saw someone say that the Thai variety of bums are tough to germinate and may like alternating temps, so I figured I had enough seeds to try both ways. Anyway if it werent for you guys I wouldnt have been able to do this. Now I just have to keep them alive.
1 of my E. Ventricosums 1 of my bums

Re: Germination!!!
Nearly 2 weeks after germinating this is the result so far and it looks like more are still coming. 27 E ventricosums and still only 2 superbums (Thai) but I looked today and one more bum broke surface which I'm excited about. All are doing great and growing fast. No deaths yet. A buddy of mine who owns a hydroponic shop wanted me to see how they would do in a hydroponic bubbler. I put 3 little ones in and within 2 days they've out grown alot of the older plants and seem to love it.

Re: Germination!!!
So basically there's little hope for mine. If you only got 2 ES to germ. out of 100, and I only had 10.....yeah. LOL. It's been just over 2 months and nothing so far. I'm not too concerned about it since I already have one plant I bought separately...just wanted to at least TRY to germinate the seeds I already had.

Re: Germination!!!
I have started 200 darjeeling to seed about a month ago. 3 days ago I had my first sprout and today another however the first one turned brown and died. What did I do wrong. I have them in the 72 count seed planters with a cover ( mini seed greenhouse) . I have used miracle grow seed mix and they are also under a heat mat. The soil might be a bit too moist would that cause a fungus problem that killed it? Can I take the cover off for a bit and let the soil dry out?? I am really new at this and am looking for a bit of help. Also do they need to have a bit of indirect light?? thanks

Re: Germination!!!
Maybe you overwatered that seedling shortly after it sprouted?

Re: Germination!!!
You can take the cover off and let it dry some. Also check to make sure the tray dosen't have any standing water.
