Banana Seed Germination Forum As one of the toughest seeds in the plant kingdom to figure out the keys to germination success with, this is a forum with banana seed germination tips. Please entitle posts like "Musa balbisiana," or "Musa cheesmani," etc. People would then post a reply under that heading, sharing their germination successes (and failures), what materials and methods they used, germination percentage, etc. |

Musa Ornata and Sikkimensis Daj Giant sprouting!
I'm seeing some success with banana seeds, really for the first time. This fluctuating temps thing is working with the ornata seeds and the Daj giant sikkimensis seeds. I planted about 8 ornata yesterday and about 5 Daj Giant sikkimensis into pots, and it looks like more are sprouting but not ready to move yet.
On the other hand, the fluctuating temps aren't working at all with the ensete glaucum. I guess they're the ones that like it warm, right? Here's my setup: I have a cheap heat mat sitting on the basement floor, (heated basement to 60 degrees). The seeds are in a germination flat and clear dome cover sitting on the mat. We have an old (1890) farmhouse, the door to outside leaks a lot of air, so the floor stays cooler there, so I put the mat and tray on the floor there about a foot from the door. I have it plugged into a timer for 7 hours on, rest of the time off. Not too scientific but the first time it's worked so far for me. Last year I planted 200 seeds and got 5 plants...and they were from the 10seeds they sent me for free!

Re: Musa Ornata and Sikkimensis Daj Giant sprouting!
I moved the e. glaucum to the top of my bunn coffeemaker which stays warm a couple of weeks ago. So far I think I have about 12 plants. So I guess they do like it warm.

9 so far have sprouted. and about 13 of the ornata. I should have shown you my basement set up when you were here. There just wasn't enough time. Maybe next time!

don't buy anything through e-bay. Too much stupid money paid for nothing. Just e-mail me directly if you want something. Or just stop by!

Re: Musa Ornata and Sikkimensis Daj Giant sprouting!
well I have a few more sprouting. I put the still covered flats outside in the shade and have a couple more ornata and one more glaucum.
