Hi guys, its been about a week this Sunday that i have transplanted my new banana plant from my buddies that lives 3 doors down from me. The plant was super healthy not one dead leaf now she doesn't look to good.. i planted her in soil. rounded her off with compost and have been watering daily. I even added a little miracle grow and it still seems to be dying.. i love this plant! Please HELP what do i do!!!!!!!!!!

Where are you located? I'm assuming it's where bananas grow outside year round. Did you plant it in full sun? Doesn't matter if mama was in it, you stress a newly dug plant when you rip if from its secure nest and force it to adapt.

I pot up new digs always, put them in dappled shade and let their roots acclimate to their new space. (I'm not proud but I just finally set out blackberries that had been in pots for a year--I didn't know where to plant them is my excuse.)

Keep watering yours and see what happens; she may make it. (Spray the leaves when you water.) If you lose her, see if you can obtain a start small enough to fit into your largest pot, coddle her and then set her out.

Varieties I supposedly bought: Manzano, Cavendish, Blue Java, Sweetheart, and Gros Michel.
What it seems I actually have: Brazilian, Cavendish, Namwah, Dwarf Red, Gros Michel, Pisang Ceylon, Veinte Cohol and SH 3640, and American Goldfinger. FHIA 1, Paggi and FHIA 17... Always room for one more.

Oh no.. so I'm out of luck huh? Should I cutt the dead leaves back ?

Not necessarily. I had turmeric, plain old ginger and a red ginger potted up; they died. A few days ago I was getting ready to recycle my precious containers when I noticed growth; today I planted the 1st 2 and will find a place for the 3rd. (I was very bad with them but they made it.)

You are probably not watering too much unless you have clay soil; your pups are in shock. (And royally ticked at you right now.) If you have a big enough pot, put the group in that with good soil. (I actually do have 1 that's big enough but most people don't.)

Bananas are pretty tough but not infallible. Cutting off old leaves will do nothing but make the plant look prettier--until there are none. If I didn't have a pot, I'd fashion one out of a tarp or large box which I filled with good dirt; this I'd put under a tree or at the least in an area that only got morning sun. Water and watch.

I spent a little over a year in Jacksonville--definitely no clay soil there. Lots of opportunities to grow warm weather plants--enjoy. Definitely shield her! (Worse case go to WM or HD or Lowes and pick up a replacement.)

So the issue was the quick transplant. . If I purchased a new in a pot I'll be okay?

If it was me I would leave it where it's at and cut back on watering. If you transplant to a pot then back to the ground it will shock it 2 more times. The damage is done and it will recover and be fine before you know. It is just reastablishing new roots at its new location. It will be fine in a couple weeks. I wouldn't water unless it's really dry. Maybe once a week depending on rain. Then in 1-2 more weeks when the plant is growing full speed pour it on. Daily would be fine then. You have 1 week down your over half way there!!

I don't know where TK lives in Jacksonville--West, North or South (which is actually east) but I do know the soil there is sand unless it's been improved; daily watering should not be an issue except that you encourage surface roots rather than those seeking a drink from a high water table. The fact that these plants came from the neighborhood means they'll do fine there. However, transplant shock is a reality and that's what I believe has occurred. (Have you ever tried to get a true rootball on a plant you dug out of sand? I have; it's not possible.)

TK, any new plants should be introduced to your area unless you buy them at a local store where they're grown outside. Even then there's nothing wrong with repotting them in your soil and waiting to put them in their permanent place. I do that. I've always done that with perennials even when I gardened in MD, OH and now FL. I rarely repot annuals but I do hold them back before setting them out. Perhaps I'm too cautious but I do have a pretty fair success rate with plants and have for the past 30+ years.

I am no banana expert, but I do remember those on here who were telling me I was overwatering / fertilizing when I had similar problems a while back I took their advice and it worked.
As for other plants, I have always tried to get them in the ground, how God intended, ASAP, and they always do well. Plants prefer to be in the ground, I think. Just my opinion.
