My basjoo was overwintered this year and didnt survive... BUT! it did make 4 pups and im now looking after them, the mother plant died and browned up I'm a avid houseplant grower and i watered the darn thing till it felt fairly dry during the winter months and during summer, well you basically need to monitor the watering... is it the lack of light? i had it my livingroom near a HUGE northfacing window, so is this all good? and if your aware folks, tell me the care for the future "offspring"
Help.?

Re: Basjoo potted?
You should have it in a South facing window...Unless you live in South America..lol
Sometimes its best not to water at all. Maybe once a month unless it is growing avidly then you can increase water. Also the most light you can get it the better. I know its not much but I put a 13 watt CFL spot light on my Siam Ruby and it really took off compared to when i just had it sitting in the window. Hope that helps....the real experts should be here shortly to help you out though... |

Re: Basjoo potted?
I have my Basjoo's facing a West window and I'm located at a Corner house..it gets a decent amount of light.
The one on the left has been growing really well! |

Re: Basjoo potted?
Yeah, I agree with nate...south-facing is best if you live in the Northern Hemisphere as it will receive the most light. Lack of light may result in the main plant dying. Then again, a couple of mine were in a south-facing window this winter and the main plants still died (and like you, pups have replaced them). You've still got the pups, though, so no worries....the plant isn't dead by any means. Just keep taking care of it and try to get it as much light as you can. Sometimes, certain varieties/plants just don't do well transitioning to indoor growing after being outdoors. I wouldn't worry about it too much...with the corm from the main plant, the pups will grow much faster and will surely do well for you this summer. Best of luck!

Re: Basjoo potted?
South facing is absolutely the way to go, especially during winter. I have a fairly large red "rojo" in a pot I overwintered inside in a south window. It was about a foot when I bought it, now its well over 5 feet tall. It slowed growth in the winter some, but did keep putting out new leaves. I had to take it outside to hose it off a few times and sprayed insecticidal soap twice to combat the damn spider mites, but it is now back outside and doing fantastic!
I also overwintered another naner whose name escapes me at the moment, but that one has seen two winters indoors in south windows and is on its third summer outside. It has leaves similar to Basjoo but the younger leaves have that splotchiness on them, and it has a reddish trunk. It was a pup of the original banana which died after I separated the pup. It has not broken any growth records, but its now over 4 feet tall and has a pup of its own that is about a foot. It too is once again outdoors and loving it. I have 4 Basjoos, but have never tried them indoors to overwinter as they will easily survive here and come back with a vengance the next spring, provided they are in ground. I may try to overwinter a couple in pots in doors this winter and I suspect that they too will probably do just as good as my others. I think the key is as much light as possible. |

Re: Basjoo potted?
Yup, gotta agree about south windows.
Here were mine grown in a south-facing window over winter... Here's one I grew last season in my south living room window also... This shot was taken today of my SDC pup also in my south window, of course. They all love south windows - not just Basjoo. : ) |
