Re: Re-introducing to Outdoors
i ended up putting my basjoos out at the end of may. they seem to have took after about 2 weeks. they have pups coming out already. however,im wondering if the plant leaves should be a little darker green than they are. ive been fertilizing with fish emoultion about every 2 weeks. i havent seen a difference in color. also, on the trunk from almost the bottom 1/2 way up im seeing some black streaks on the stalks. what is that???? is that normal? if not what do i do? there is a new leaf coming up all the time. plez update me with any info thank you!

Re: Re-introducing to Outdoors
correct me if I'm wrong guys. All the leaves the come out are a bit lighter and darken the longer they are exposed to the sun. ALso the black streaks are probably caused by the uv light and does no harm. However if the stem feels mushy not firm where it is black it could be rot and then it should be cut off to prevent it from spreading. The plant should come back once the rot is gone. As long as the stem feels firm and not mushy you are ok.

Re: Re-introducing to Outdoors
Best thing is to set them out in shade or wait for lots of clouds in weather. If you get a couple days w/ overcast - set your plants out.

Re: Re-introducing to Outdoors
I had some basjoos in the ground. Some of these, I got covered and mulched properly; these all made it fine. Some, I didn't finish covering; they didn't make it. There were also some in pots, outside. I took some of the pots inside, and kept them growing over the winter. These made it fine. Lastly, I took some out of their outside pots, shook most of the soil off of them, cut the leaves off, put them in a plastic garbage bag, and placed another g-bag over the tops. I placed them in a cool room (around 50° F for most of the winter) and ignored them. They got no water, (I didn't even go in the room.) and five months later, (April 5) uncovered them, put them in pots, outside, gave them a little water, and they resumed growing. I had not cut the p-stems back at all, when I took them inside. When I put them out, I had to cut about six soft inches off of one: the rest were good right to the top. Other varieties, besides basjoo, were taken inside, in their pots, and kept growing all winter.
