OK- the moles are out of control!
I understand that you need to get rid of the grubs before the moles will leave but are there any other methods to "ridding" the area of these guys?
This year is the first year that I have had a lawn service (Massey Services- central Florida) do the lawn care and the grubs and moles are literally out of control. I called them about the issue and they came out and sprayed for weeds??? I found the grubs while planting several Maples in the back yard. I was installing a mulch ring and discovered 20-30 within the area for a 36" mulch ring. Massey didn't even go in the back yard and ended up spraying for weeds in the side yard. WHat good is this? I think I need to fire them and just do it myself. It's killing me seeing the yard go down hill like this. |

Re: OK- the moles are out of control!
Wow- that is a very interesting techinque. That would be the best way to purge a garden but a lawn would be tough. I have almost 3k feet of lawn and that's a lot of tarps. The city will issue citations for a boat behind a fence or trash cans on the street a day early/ late. I could never get away with the lawn covered in tarps for 6 weeks.
It's still repairable at this point. I have been told by several people to use the Bayer Insect for grubs............... |

Re: OK- the moles are out of control!
Plant castor beans. I have read that they will repel the moles. I am not sure about spacing, but I am certain if you Google it, you will find lots of useful info. Note, if you have small children it is not an option as Castor beans are poisonous.

Re: OK- the moles are out of control!
What about a boat in front of the fence? Lets say you have a 16 foot ski boat with a cover sitting on a trailer in your driveway. Is that an issue?

Re: OK- the moles are out of control!
Depends on the City/County rules.
Example: Miami/Dade County Miami-Dade County - My Neighborhood Boat storage Boats of less than 30 feet in length are permitted to be stored on a residential property. However, these guidelines must be followed: They should be stored behind the front building line, behind the side street. The building line is the portion furthest from the street. Only one boat is permitted on the property at one time. The boat and place of storage must be kept clean and neat. Major repairs are not permitted on the property. The boat may not be used as living quarters and must be on a trailer for transportation. |

Lol they wouldn't even know it if its out of sight. Unless they are walking around on your property. When I did read our deed restrictions it basically covered only things that could be seen from the street.

Re: OK- the moles are out of control!
Well, if the moles are still the problem.
It is my experience that there is only one effective treatment. Sorry to say (as a Buddhist) but in a garden the rule is: There is only one good mole and that is a dead mole. One of few effective ways to kill them is setting traps. Hint: Think like a mole to set the traps correctly.

Good thing you are not in North Carolina, you can not kill a mole without requesting and receiving a permit from the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. crazy huh!?

Re: OK- the moles are out of control!
North Carolina........
Well it can even be more crazy than that... I am living in The Netherlands. About half of our country lies meters under sea-level. So are we. I am located on what is called "the new land". This land was taken from the sea in only the previous century, in the decade around 1942. We are surrounded and safeguarded by and fully dependent of dikes.... Until recently (2004) we also where not permitted to kill a single mole......!! See the location on Google earth etc.. I have had a few moles in my Zen-garden ...... you would not believe the damage such small, little, tiny animal (monster see: Moles) can bring in only a single night. I am still trying to find out what a Taoist or Buddhist does in these situations. I think I have hit a taboo with that.

Just kiddin', moles can be very unpleasant visitors. Especially in your vermicompost boxes. I lost way too many on that. I found out, that when building a fence, you have to make it about 45 to 60cm into the soil as well. That keeps not only moles, but also other animals away...
