Traditionally fe'i sheath was used to add black patterns in woven mats. They don't always have that deep black on the whole pseudostem, it varies by variety, age and growing conditions, some I've seen are all green.

This young sucker from Manoa valley had a very nice black pseudostem, but the mature plants in the mat were mostly green.

Seeds and fe'i is a complex and poorly understood issue, I would chance to guess that this variety is normally seedless but has the capacity to form seeds in certain circumstances.
