Alocasia trunks rotting

Do any of you have experience with A. adora or Calidora ? Mine get a trunk each year and it breaks off (Rots off) in the spring when it gets new growth. The leaves continue to grow out of the severed trunk and it eventually roots!

My largest potted one that's like four years old it's starting to do this now. I think it's just what they do so that they can reproduce. All the pieces root and grow and then there's a big patch of them. Of course four years growth in indiana is probably the same as a year where you live...lol...

Hey Pete, like what Sandy said, it's the nature of this beast. They are like that all over the bush and the jungle. I guess they are so horny that producing seeds and runners ain't enough that they need to detach themselves and find more action even if it's a couple of inches away!

In their natural habitat you can find them growing in a prostate position with the length of the tuber horizontal. If you see the last pix I posted of the Colocasia, the bottom of the tuber is a nice curve meaning it was broken off before.

Say, I've seen them with really long trunks too, sprawling for many yards(on the web),is this climate related? Would stress cause them to sever the trunk in an attempt to procreate ? I've never had a trunk over 2', but I've seen many potted ones (also on the web) that had trunks of 3'-4'.
