The Brug is most likely Shredded White, it is unusual isn't it?

Thanks for the id, Maggi... I am just starting to get into Brugs, and didn't realize the vastness of its species... This one is about the strangest bloom I have ever seen on any plant.... Way too cool, though....

Thanks for the kind words Randy, but you know this plant swapping thing is working both ways. I love having a plant swapping buddy, twice the plants for half the money. About the hibiscus, the red one was a no name i picked up at K Mart. The peach one i got from Stokes Tropicals about 10 or 12 years ago. I looked on their website but they don't have it anymore. I used to know the name of it but i just can't remember it anymore. You're making my plants look great. Ohhh i think i need one of those brugs. I'll be making a trip to your house soon.

Hey Cathy,
That Brug is one that you gave me this past spring... I MIGHT let you have a cutting since it IS your plant in the first place!!! LOL

Mine hasn't bloomed yet, unless there's one on it now, haven't looked lately. I got it at Logee's. It's either super nova or one that just has species, no name. That sure don't look like the pics in catalog.

Randy, been doing some searching on the net. What you have is the species from Logee's. I also found out that it's a shredded white. Sometimes the second flush of flowers looks totally different than the first flush. Go to garden web, type in shredded white brugmansia in the search box, and read some of the posts.

Logees did sell both the species which is a white double and the shredded white which is shredded (originally found from a wild seedling, growing in MX, I think). I have the shredded white. I had originally ordered the species but they gave me the wrong one. Mine has been consistantly shredded. At first I was mad but I decided to keep it because it is unusual and has such a nice fragrance.
Hard to pollinate though because the pollen tube is always so twisted and sometimes 'glued' to other parts of the flower.

Randy that shredded white is spectacular. I have never seen anything like it before. They look just like little wedding dresses.

Thats one we will never get in the UK.

I really should move to the U.S

Would you mind if I posted your picture on the oasis site to make them all drool.

Most "serious" brug people don't grow shredded white (I am not one of them, fortunately I am not too serious about anything, LOL... I have 3 and have been growing them for several years). The shredding is believed to be a virus-caused mutation and some people (not me) are very wary of that.

Sometimes "normal" brugs will "shred" if there is a radical weather event (like an intense heat wave, or conversely, an unexpected radical dip in temps) while flower buds are setting. I have had shredded flowers on Jamaican Yellow, Butterfly, and Ecuador Pink before.

Yours looks great! Good growing there!

I may have taken a photo of one of the Jamaican Yellows last season, I'll have to look for it. I didn't bother with the others. The first time it happened, I was freaked out because I thought that the plants had somehow "reverted" to being "shredded" from being in close proximity to my Shredded Whites. At first it was only on one plant, but, as all of my brugs tend to bloom in flushes at the same time almost every time, it soon became apparent that it was on ALL the plants. Weird. So I took a photo to show to the "serious" brug people, and was schooled that Jamaican Yellow is one of th ones that most often exhibits this "splitting" behaviour on its flowers, but others can do it too.

It doesn't look like the classic shredding of Shredded White, where the petals kind of clearly develop serapately. It looks more like someone took scissors and cut the flowers like paper dolls.

Hmmm.... I feel that another plant hunt is now necessary to get shredded white! I assume that I should be able to get seeds for it from a seed merchant?

I'll have a look tonight.

I hope the ukoasis mods let you on soon Randy!
