Here's an update two weeks later:
I put it in pot and it continued to grow. The heat mat was just on at night. During the days it was warm enough. Very easy to grow that stuff - I hope it'll continue that way!

Im also trying to grow some sugar cane! I got some from the store and Im trying to root them in water by a very sunny and warm window. I think roots are starting to grow on one of them now. Once roots begin to show Im going to pot it up horizontally and let it take off! I have purple sugar cane.
Great pics everyone!

They grow like slugs in So Cal, cos they don't get enough water. But any sugar cane grower should have this machine:

Louisiana striped

"Jamaican Striped" or "Green Rose Ribbon"
I obtained "Jamaican Striped" from a house that is 10 minutes from my home.A very friendly grower gave me 2 stalks of this very pretty cane. She has since sprouted!

my sugar cane is pretty cool, but I don't like it. Since we have to bring it in for winter, and the edges of the leaves are razor sharp. whenever I have to deal with it, I end up with like paper cuts all over me!

I found two pieces of Ko Manulele (Hawaiian green/maroon variegated stem) at the local farmer's
market here. (see photo) The smaller piece was cut into 3 sections and is becoming 'one-with-my-garden',
but the other one is waiting until Greenie looks at the photo.

I also planted a dark maroon cane with maroon tinted leaves called Ko Honua'ula. I'm told
there is another variety called Ko Halali'i that is yellow pink, and green, but I haven't found it yet.

Two pieces of Ko Manulele
