Re: Anybody growing Sugar Cane?
About half of my day job is sugar cane research, and I used to be a manager on a 120,000 acre sugarcane farm. Most of the pictures that I see are saccharum officinarum, while most of the commercial varieties for sugar are multispecific hybrids of the genus saccharum. We have some heirloom plots at my work in Belle Glade at the UF/IFAS research station. Most of the breeding work done in the US is done about 3 miles south of my banana farm in Canal Point. For those of you in the panhandle they have a sugarcane field day in Quincy every year where they distribute cane for planting.
I saw a question about planting seeds, but from what I have learned at the breeding station, viable seed is only produced under a very well defined set of environmental conditions. |

Re: Anybody growing Sugar Cane?
When I went to the home of local man to get a Hawaiian banana, and noticed that he had some striped sugar cane. One was green and white. When I got a real close look I noticed that the leaves were variegated green and white too. I didn't have my camera at the time so I'll have to wait until it grows before I can get some leaf shots.

Re: Anybody growing Sugar Cane?
I just bought a piece of sugar cane at the store and it looks like the forming buds were cut off. Does anyone know if it will still grow if the buds are cut off?

Re: Anybody growing Sugar Cane?
Never tried-my understanding was if you had a piece you could just stick it in the soil and it would root.

Re: Anybody growing Sugar Cane?
Here are some pics of my cane...
I cut the tops off and plant them back into the ground, usually at an angle... ...sometimes horizontal...

Re: Anybody growing Sugar Cane?
Don't know when this is big enough to cut/eat, but it is still growing. Almost like a large weed.

Re: Anybody growing Sugar Cane?
I took over a garden plot that had purple sugar cane growing. Like MediaHound stated, it can be very invasive. I've dug up countless shoots and the buggers keep coming back. Plus it draws tons of ants.
