Anybody here have a date palm in their yard?
I know it takes a very long time to get fruit, but it's cool to have one growing just for appearance. It's pretty hot here in the long summer, so that works for dates, but not sure if they can survive the 40s temp here in the winter.
Thanks, |

Re: Anybody here have a date palm in their yard?
I have had this CIDP for 3 years now in a 45 gallon nursery pot. I goes into my unheated garage every winter and sees temps well below freezing with no damage. If I lived in a full zone warmer (8b), I would definitely be planting this baby out in the yard and think it would do fairly well... Some protection is the harshest winters, but not very often. Where you live should be great.
I need to find someone to take it off my hands and plant it outside!!! More reliable info: Canary Island Date Palm Tree - Phoenix Canariensis |

Re: Anybody here have a date palm in their yard?
Now if I can find one in Cleveland, TN, I know you shouldn't have any problem finding one where you are located!!! I bought mine at the end of summer for about $20 and it was a 15 gallon palm. Here is one of THE best places I have dealt with in the past for palms, mail order. Not sure exactly where you are located, but hey, sure you can get one from here!!! Re: Anybody here have a date palm in their yard?
I figured out there you could find true date or medjools @ Lowe's or HD... I'd just search palms in cali :^) you should do fine if you roll thru half the list Good Luck

Re: Anybody here have a date palm in their yard?
if your average low is 4o's go for it.. i have mostly pindos here thats the closest thing to "true date palms" i have. they are hardy. this year i had no spear pull/crown freeze and we had two solid weeks of freezing and below freezing. i still feel ice in the p- stems of my bananas
get a date palm.. if i were you i would get a nice sized one and get it established so you wont have to baby it as much. believe me i had to nurse a few crown rotted young palms maybe i will get a good sized canary island date palm in the future? check your local flea market or farmers market for palms. i dont know where u live but i can go to Atlanta farmers market and get just about any type of palm i want, and get a good deal. i dont think i have ever paid over $20.00 for any palm. also better to see what u are buying. |

Re: Anybody here have a date palm in their yard?
The "new" sport that's kinda popular now is to stand on a surfboard, use a long oar and paddle around. Looked fun, I've seen it in southern Cali and Hawaii beaches. Maybe your daughter can try that.

Re: Anybody here have a date palm in their yard?
These are native palms here and 40F is nothing for them, well as long as we are talking about Phoenix Canariensis palms, wich are much more hardy than thrue Date palm Phoenix Dactylifera. Course U can go to Phoenix Theophrstii if U like smaller palms whan they are mature (in some 20 years ).

Re: Anybody here have a date palm in their yard?
I don't have palms in my yard, but they're the commonest boulevard trees in Ambato. The city grows and maintains some truly spectacular:
Canary Island Dates Medjools Pindos and Quitos I find myself wishing I lived in the sector that uses Medjools on the street, but alas, I'd have to marry a football player to afford the down-payment. |
