Re: avocado flower?
Yikes.. That looks like a pre bud! Wait to see if it gets kinda cauliflower looking. They usually form on the tip of a established branch..Its time for Simmons to set blooms and that could be what happened. Or it could be a pre blush forming some new shoots. Either way its exciting g to see it .
I see you realize that the 15 gallon pot is the ticket to healthier trees that’s the smartest way to keep trees allowing the root system to grow.. Anywayz in a few more days you will know whats UP.. If its a bloom , I would clip it to allow all the energy to go to the plant and not set a flower ,, I know its painful and Im glad its not me who will cut it ! You can ask around to be sure my advice is best OUCH! PS Your plant looks great

Re: avocado flower?
A bloom wouldn't surprise me they bloom early. I really screwed up and failed to protect mine in a 21F 21F freeze. I may have lost both of my young trees I guess come spring we'll see.

Re: avocado flower?
Are grafted avocados like citrus in that they remember nodes? Me? I'd let that puppy develop and go for it. Just that one...

Re: avocado flower?
Pine Island rates the Simmons excellent. Early season bearer.
I'd like to get me some budwood to graft onto my not-so-lula. 'SIMMONDS' is South Florida’s most popular early season avocado. Good production, exceptional trade acceptance, and superb eating quality make it an excellent choice for the home garden or grove. Season: June-August Fruit Quality......................excellent Fruit Size: 1-1.5 lbs. (16-24oz) Production.........................good Consistency............. good Commercial Planting.......excellent Home Planting.................... excellent |

Re: avocado flower?
How old is your avocado? Do you need a pollinator for it to set fruit? How long has it been potted?

Re: avocado flower?
^^yes all good questions.
Quote:
It was in a 1gal pot then re potted into a 15gal which you see it in today. (7months) as for pollinator no, i have not done anything other then water and fertilizer. I do have multiple mature avocados in my area which could act as a pollinator. (do all avocados need a pollinator?) below is a pic of a Simmons a friend purchased (which is not flowering), the same day I got mines. its practically identical to how mines looked. can anyone determine the age of that avocado? cause that's the age of mines I'm thinking less then 1 year (with lara) + 7 months in my pot. is this graft a early (teen-age) bloomer? I was under the impression i took up to 3 years for a graft to fruit. |

I just planted an avocado tree. How long before I start getting fruit? This depends on several factors. First of all, are you purchasing a tree from a nursery or growing a tree from seed? If purchasing a tree, you can probably expect to see your first fruit 3-4 years after planting the tree. If growing from seed, it can take anywhere from 5 to 13 years before the tree is mature enough to set fruit. When the tree does flower, expect a lot of flowers to fall from the tree without setting fruit. This is natural. Answers to Questions by Dr. Mary Lu Arpaia and Dr. Ben Faber |
