Re: Baby Pineapple
Jane, you can save the tops from store bought ones or buy other varieties. I prefer something that you can't buy in the store!http://cgi.ebay.com/PINEAPPLE-PLANT-...QQcmdZViewItem
Ive bought from them before, good source!

Re: Baby Pineapple
cool
I think I have 6 kinds now, your usual Dole and DelMonte, and 4 ornamentals: two dwarves (Ananas nana and another very redddish brown seen below), one variegated, and one Ananas Mongo (the NO ID reddish brown one - anyone know what it is?) (Ananas nana) (Ananas Mongo) (variegated pineapple) My pineapples: http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=527 ps all of these pics are about a year old or so...

Re: Baby Pineapple
good place for pineapples.. http://www.fruitlovers.com/fruittreeprices.html
i would stay away from ebay pineapple plants.. as i got a several a fews years ago, but had razors on blades. the co. above i purchased two slips and are razorless and are real sugarloafs from hawaii.. no, you don't need min. order on these tops.. these will grow faster than those on ebay, since shoots, slips and pups. these come from already fruited plants and will fruit quicker.. here's a link to some of my plants..http://sgbananas.spaces.live.com/?_c11_PhotoAlbum_spaHandler=TWljcm9zb2Z0LlNwYWNlcy5XZWIuUGFydHMu UGhvdG9BbGJ1bS5GdWxsTW9kZUNvbnRyb2xsZXI%24&_c11_PhotoAlbum_spaFolderID=cns!17DFB22666F22EA6!119&_c11_PhotoAlbum_startingImageIndex=0&_c11_PhotoAlbum_commentsExpand=0&_c11_PhotoAlbum_addCommentExpand=0&_c11_PhotoAlbum_addCommentFocus=0&_c=PhotoAlbum here's what they sent

Re: Baby Pineapple
Those are nice photos. I have already harvested my first crop last summer, and I have a bunch of new ones maturing now. I am wondering if the second crop will be larger sized fruits? I think what I have now are smooth cayannes.

Re: Baby Pineapple
Jeffrey, Fruit size is determined by a few things, (other than plant variety). Here are a few links that may be helpful
http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/BODY_MG055 http://www.crfg.org/pubs/ff/pineapple.html BTW, The Nino corm I ordered arrived in good shape, thanks!

Re: Baby Pineapple
It took my pineapple about 3 years to fruit after the first one and the quality was much lower. I am still waiting for it to put up a new pup, but it has not. I am afraid it is now dead, but I have two tops I started and a pup I seperated from it last year so I have a few going still.

Re: Baby Pineapple
Jarred,
I believe your red one is Ananas lucidus. Below are pictures I've taken of various pineapple.

Re: Baby Pineapple
Thanks Gabe, I looked that one up, and indeed it very may well be.
Here is a nice new photo of one of mine, I have about ten in the spot where this one is, most all with fruit: Speaking of pineappes, I just got this one, too: Variegated with no spines! I think it's Ananas comosus variegata 'Smooth Cayenne' but if there's a shortened, more appropriate name, do let me know! I found this PDF while researching it http://hort.ifas.ufl.edu/shrubs/ANACOMB.PDF I found this other nice webpage while researching it. There's a great series of photos at the end showing a commercial pineapple operation sowing a field. http://www.hort.purdue.edu/newcrop/t...30/lec_30.html
