Container Growing
A bit of background:
I always try to have a completely different type of display at the Hamilton County Fair each year. Cincinnati is very urban and I have a farming background, so plants are usually my focus. Two years ago, it was hot peppers - about 35 different types. Last year it was a giant hibiscus (the Tainung-2 variety that looks like a pot plant and got the attention of some deputy sheriffs!) and tomatoes growing in hydroponics. This year, I am hoping to have a raised bed with about 30 types of veggies but as an adjunct to that, some containers. Clear containers, so visitors who really think potatoes grow in the supermarket, can see them in dirt. But to make it fun, I want themed containers. One theme - my Peanut Butter and Jelly container; peanuts on the outside with strawberries in the middle Peter Rabbit - carrots on the outside, lettuce in the middle Spice Up Your Life - Horseradish and Onions along the sides, basil, chives and oregano in the middle Staples of Meals - Potatoes growing where the spuds can be seen with corn and climbing beans in the middle I'm sure there are other themes that would work. I plan on using large Sterilite containers, ones where I can get at least three or four plants along the long side. If you have any suggestions, post them! Mike |
