Tony, I just heard that Champaigne tastes very good. Can I swap anything for a stick to graft onto mine? I grafted Big Jim in early spring. Is that the best time or is any time good? Does your tree cgo semi-dormant?

Patty I am a beginner as far as grafting but I would guess early spring is the best time. The trees here don't go dormant.

Tony, I myself am a beginner too. I know w/ some fruit trees (esp the apple I bought for Mike), I got dormant sticks & put them in my fridge crisper till the tree started to bud & then grafted w/ much luck. The Big Jim came to me in March & looked dormant but maybe just leaves cut off & I grafted it then.

Today when I was watering my plants. I checked and found 2 more loquats sprouted, so I have 4 total. I'll take picture of the new sprouts when the get bigger. The first one that sprouted has 4 leaves on it at the moment.

Wow Tony, My biggest tree is 6 feet tall. I'm wondering when it will produce flowers though they would probably die here.

Trees that are vegetatively propagated will begin to bear fruit in 5 years or less, as compared to 8 to 10 years in seedling trees

Cameron, I planted my loquat seeds in March '06 and I'm hoping for it to blossom this year. I do have 13 baby fruits on the branch that I grafted Big Jim to.
Tony, I'll pm you for a possible trade of a branch of your Champaign. If I graft it (& it takes), I will get fruits next year from it....hopefully even later this year.

Wow Patty, I need to try grafting my loquat. I brought it inside for a couple of days because the temps were in the single digits. The is another member that lives nearby that has a loquat tree. I got some seeds from him too.

There you are, yes, those will work. Cut 2 (please) w/ 5-6 leaves on then cut the leaves off. Wrap damp ppr towel around bottom & put in crisper(to force some dormancy) till we have temps above freezing LOL. This week will go below 0 F .
Cameron, I did a cleft/ wedge graft. It's so nice to know ppl who have fruiting trees to graft with or may take another coupl years for mine to bear fruit. It is 5 yrs old.
I'll post pics of the graft as I do it.

We always have seedlings from 1 - 2 years old, a couple inches tall to 1' - 2' tall.

We keep our main producer pruned down to 5' - 6' tall so we can reach all the fruit w/o needing a ladder.

Ours started producing fruit when it was only a couple years old.

I'd love to swap with anyone who has some Veinte Cohol or Dwarf Namwah or else if someone wants to cover postage, I'll be happy to mail seedlings / saplings after frost danger has passed.

.

We have mailed tons of these guys down to the New Orleans / coastal Alabama area to repopulate foliage wiped out in Katrina so we've got the mailing techniques down pat.

I found a pic I took yesterday . For some reason when I put my SD card in puter, it hides the pics & I have to find them.
This is Big Jim loquats on a small branch that I grafted last March... oops, I think it was more like March of '09. They are 1 inch so far.

There are 13 fruit ... but there was over 100 blossoms. I did some hand pollinating as I wasn't sure if they are self Pol.
I will try to find a pic of the simple graft I did.

This is cleft/wedge graft. I use a razer for utility knife - sterilized in alcohol. When you cut the top part to a point, make sure it is smooth & even. Also, on the edges of the V, take a tiny sliver off each end on both sides. Make sure the budstick is same size as the branch you choose - preferrably not too high up the tree.
Not TOO tight w/ the rubber band but give some stretch. Then wrap from bottom up with graft tape or even strip of plastic from a bread bag.
Hope this helps. Don't be discouraged if it doesn't take ...I grafted 2 diff sticks & only 1 took on my tree. 5 of 6 took on my paw paw trees.

Tony, you got banana, pitaya & loquat growing together. Are they all on same rootstock? LOL.
How big are those loquats now? Mine are 1 1/2 inches long. Hopefully, none fall off before they're ripe -- like the damned citrus!
