Default Germinating Coconuts

There is a lot of info online about growing coconut from the "seed". But the instructions are usually from a store bought fruit. This coconut is as close to wild harvested as I could get... it's from the parking lot of the local Home Depot! They have a dozen or so trees planted in the parking area and they all set fruit regularly. The problem is the bunches usually get cut off before they mature, so I have been trying to time it right to collect some. One was dropped to the ground, so I thought I'd give it a try. It's small, cracked and fresh from the tree. It's only about the size of a grapefruit. Is it worth going to the trouble for this? If so, do I need to let it age a while before attempting to sprout it?

its not old enough..but if you want to try..coconuts have a flat side{inside three eyes,2 on bottom 1 on top]lay on thr flat side1/2 in damp soil,or some other medium you might use..this time of year do it inside in clear plastic, bag or box.keep at 80 to 84 deg with 87 % hum..wait 2 - 6 months..roots go down before leaf goes up so becareful when checking it for germination..the reason they cut them could be for pipas young coconut water is great...if germinated root will be comming out of eye on bottom but you might not see it

Do you mean that it's not old enough in that it hasn't matured on the tree long enough... or that it's still green? All of the coconut germination that I have seen has been with inner brown part. Should I let it age for a while before attempting to sprout it?

OK thanks. I was thinking that it is too immature, but at the same time coconuts might not size up that well in S. Florida. I might be able to snag some larger ones b/c the trees have a lot on them and there were some about 3 times the size.
