To me, the smell is more like rotting cheese. If it is a female, you might only need to have a male within a few miles to pollinate the flowers and produce fruit. I can never seem to remember but one sex has a solid leaf and one has a split. I think the male has the split, which is what your photo shows...to a bit of an extreme. You can do a google search and know for sure. I have planted a few at my parents' house and they have grown slowly. I have a few more in pots at my house and plan on planting them in the future. I'm not too concerned about fruit. As long as it isn't next to a parking area or my house then I don't care about the temporary stink in the fall when the fruit ripens.

I planted one at my mothers house a few years ago. Beautiful trees, great shape, bright yellow fall colors. You can't ask for a better tree nothing bothers it pollution, pests etc. In the event it is a female it will take something like 12-15yrs before it fruits. It's no more of a mess than other fruiting trees, you just have to stay on top of the cleanup and the seeds are edible as well.

I planted a 30gal 2 years ago and it's a beautiful tree. On mature trees, the male tree generally has a less "full" look (or so I've heard). The leaves tend to follow the branches more.
