Question Got me some PURPLE Prickly..Now how do I?

Got me some Purple Prickly pear cactus now how exactly should I go about planting the pads?

Instructions say do not water for 45 days?? Huh?

I wanted to plant them straight into the ground but the chances of not getting any rain for 45 days here in Lizard Creek in South Louisiana is not possible!

Heck it rains every afternoon just about lol

Should I go ahead and plant them in pots then transplant as they mature?

What ya think?

Thanks in advance.

S.

Everywhere there is an "eye" on the cactus, it will sprout a root so you don't have to stick it in very deep. Abnshrek is right, either elevated or on a slope so it has good drainage. Also, mix in pea gravel and sand if you have clay type soil.

Here in Mexico, if I don't throw my opuntia prunings directly on the burn pile, they root and start a new unwanted batch...be careful what you wish for.

I was about to say... the prickley pear here.. if you don't throw it into a tree or napalm it, it's going to grow. I've burned pieces but didn't burn it ENOUGH and it STILL grew.
