Default Hedychium Longicornutum

This bloom is so unusual and looks nothing like most other butterfly ginger blooms. It is definitely not as cold hardy as most of the other butterfly gingers I grow. This one is epiphydic as well and definitely goes in the greenhouse in the fall.

omg ive been on asiatic green for four years trying to find one of those, closest one ive found was in hawaii, but it was still very expensive to buy, where did you find yours? how long did the flower seem to last?

There is a seller on eBay that puts this ginger for sale in late summer once a year. I believe he's from Hawaii. I don't remember how much I paid for it but I don't think it was more than $20. The flower lasts about a month. There is another stalk in bloom now. It was very slow to get started but it has really kicked into gear recently.

Very nice ginger! Wish I could grow it around here.
Only ginger I have had success with are the white buttefly gingers. I dug them up this winter, but will leave them in the ground next year. The spot that I have them planted in is a warm mircoclimate where purple hearts, lantanas, cannas, and begonias survive the winter so Butterfly gingers should survive also! I got 2 blooms from mine in late November last year. Hoping for blooms earlier in the season this year!
So far my alphina is doing very well also but I have only had it for February so I cant say how successful I am with it yet.

H. Coronarium, white butterfly ginger, is rated to zone 7. If you are successfully growing begonias, cannas, and the like in the ground, then H. Coronarium should be happy. Which Alpinia are you growing? It's a strange genus of gingers. There are numerous ones that will take down to 20 and come back and some that will not live under 50. Of course, the most beautiful ones are not the cold tolerant ones.
