How do you if your sugar cane plants are dead?

I know that it’s the end of my growing season here in Ohio. I brought in my sugar cane plants in with the others earlier. My sugar canes grew like weeds! They were getting pretty big for me! I’s sure that they aren’t nearly as tall as they’re suppose to be. Anyway, I just noticed that my nice and green looking sugar canes now are dried out and look like straw. Does that mean they’re completely dead? Just gong into hibernation for the winter? Do they ever survive spending the winter inside a home? Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks in advance.....

The cane roots die when the ground freezes. .... You save some cane stalks. Late next spring or early spring cut the stalks into sections and plant those for a new crop of cane. .....If the stalks have dried out (COMPLETELY), then they are no good. ..... Farmers save their 'seed' cane by hilling. That the stalks are covered with mulch and dirt until the next spring for planting.

I hope ya’ll don’t mind me asking about another couple of sugar canes. I’ve got a whole bunch of starter sugar canes. Now one really grew fast! I have a couple others that are growing real nice now! However, a lot of them have not grown at all. Is that normal that not all of them grow at the same time? How do I know if they will grow or if they are deader than a door nail? Here’s some more pictures.....

You rooted that one vertically. If you had laid it down in the soil, new roots & plants would grow from each joint. That would have been at least 3 more plants. Use a long tray instead of cups.

The ones that are split probably won't grow, but the others should. Good luck growing them, they are beautiful plants.

Thanks so much for the heads up about planting them vertical! I think I am going to have get another kind of cane and try it your way! Sounds like fun!

I've never seen any with a triangular hole in the center. Ours are all completely solid all the way through. I don't know that the difference is.

I wonder if mine might be dried out. Maybe that’s why they have the holes. Thanks for kind reply!

So, I have a question. Usually in summer my sugarcane will start to put out suckers that grow 4-6 inches tall and then stop. The primary cane will continue to grow but the suckers just pause and eventually turn brown. Anyone have an idea why is that? I have regular green sugarcane. Thanks.

Not enough water? Mine do not like to ever dry out, so I'm generous with the watering, and the litle shoots never fail to grow. Mine is the variegated Hawaiian one.
