I must have the worlds only pineapple top that won't sprout
I bought a pineapple like a month or nearly two months ago and I cut off the top and placed it in water for nearly 3 wks, not a single root grew. So I figured I was doing something wrong so I removed all of the leftover fruit, and removed the bottom leaves. Its been in water another 3 wks or less. What is wrong with this pineapple?

Re: I must have the worlds only pineapple top that won't sprout
If you removed all the excess fruit and peeled some of the bottom leaves off, skip putting it in water, and plant it in some fast draining soil ( seed starting, cactus mix, etc.). Place in full sun, water about once a week, and after you see some new growth, begin to fertilize with a diluted mixture, about 25 to 40 % of full strength once a month. Miracle Grow will work just fine, but don't overdo the fertilizer while in small pots, they are sensitive to excessive salt build up. Fish emulsion, kelp , or compost tea would be better if you have some, or alternate both. They like the sun, heat, and ample amounts of nitrogen, and potassium.

Re: I must have the worlds only pineapple top that won't sprout
I twist the tops off, trim the fruit off and peel the leaves off to above the little root nubs so they can be down far enough in the water without the leaves getting in the water. I use a little jelly jar and change the water everyday to keep air flow in it. I rooted one once directly into dirt and it worked also but now I always just have a jelly jar of water sitting on my kitchen counter near the window with a pineapple top in it. Lazy me...the one I have now is so root bound the roots are rounded into the shape of the glass. I've GOT to get it planted!!

Re: I must have the worlds only pineapple top that won't sprout
I also twist them off and cut the excess fruit. Then I pull off the bottom leaves until I have about a 1/2 an inch to an inch of clear "trunk". I let it dry out on the table for a day or two and then I place it in water. Sometimes I have roots comming out within days, but in less than a month, its ready for planting.
Good luck!

Re: I must have the worlds only pineapple top that won't sprout
I do the same as palmtree, but let it dry for a lot longer--at least 10 days and then plant it directly in a fast draining soil or potting media.

It's nice that the grocery store has them year round! If you're like me you'll be standing there deciding which one to buy from which top looks best!

Re: I must have the worlds only pineapple top that won't sprout
The grocery store guy helped me. I am growing another one that I bought as a plant, but I started this one before I got that one...ugh. I hope it will grow.

Re: I must have the worlds only pineapple top that won't sprout
It will :^) I was quite unsuccessful my first time, but success comes with knowledge and effort I think. I believe now I could get one of those to grow if I tried or had the time.. lol :^)

Re: I must have the worlds only pineapple top that won't sprout
once you eat a home grown pineapple you will never eat a store bought one again! Back in Trinidad they big and can get ripe to they are so sweet you have to add some salt to cut back the sweetness.
