Low Maintenance Gardening
These pictures are from my front yard. They show how a densely arranged mat of ground covers makes
it almost impossible for weeds to find a place to grow. Even if seeds fall through the tight vegetation, they will be completely devoid of sufficient light for growth and die. I like to relate the amount of maintenance work required to lawn-equivalent for the same area, assuming a small walk-behind mover. The first year there will be considerably more work, mostly due to weeding. The second year you may break even, depending how much plant goods you have. Early in the year there will still be more work than the lawn equivalent area, but toward the end of the growing season, as the bare spots fill in, the amount of work will be less. After that you will walk around with you hands in your pocket, admiring you handy-work and just pull out half a dozen weeds every 2 or three weeks.
