Re: Pandanus amaryllifolius
Hi G972, over here, this is the official Pandan plant which is used as a natural flavouring in most dishes. It is an easy grower as long there is sufficient heat and water. All you need to do is remove a sucker from a clump and plant it into any soil and voila! In no time you will have your own clump. You can find it almost everywhere especially in the city where most houses will have it for their own use. However, there are some strains which have a much higher aroma and is much prized.
My sister ties up a bunch and puts it in her car as a deordorizer. Very good in the closet and cupboards as a cockcroach deterrent. It is used in an local egg jam called Kaya which makes a great sandwich spread. |

Re: Pandanus amaryllifolius
That makes me want even more! Where would a person find it? Do you think some Asian grocery stores would sell it?

Re: Pandanus amaryllifolius
Since I am not in the US, maybe others can help you there. If they do sell it by the plant, it's gotta to have some of the base left. If it's got enough, you can cut off the leaves and plant it with a clear plastic bag over it to retain high humidity. It get on after a while.
All the best and do keep us posted of your search. |

Re: Pandanus amaryllifolius
I'm reading that there are different types of pandanus. Can all of them be used for cooking or only this particular one? Is that the same plant that harbors the giant lizards in Miami?
