Ouch... mine is in less then 5 gallon currently. I have a bunch of 7 gallons. I may have a 10 gallon. I'll pot up to 7 and next spring move up.

I want a giant home grown pineapple.

I've read that they will grow in almost pure sand.

Brian has posted more photos then he's included in this thread. I was checking them out tonight and thought I'd add them here for others that have been following this thread and drooling with envy!

Rondon from 8/9/2010

Brian, can you give us a description of the fruit of Rondon and any others you've tried thus far?

Thanks Harvey!

Rondon is still being evaluated. I picked it a bit early cause I had to leave town and didn't want to miss tasting it. It also survived one of the coolest winters we've had in a long time, so the plant was in sad shape prior to fruiting. As you can see from the photo it's flesh is white, and almost no fiber. The taste was sweet but a little off ( due I think to the condition of the plant ). 3 1/2 to 4 lbs.

Philippine Hybrid is still being evaluated. I didn't taste it due to being out of town at the time of ripening. Family members said it was one of the best this season. Plant was also trashed by winter, and the fruit was small. 2 lbs.

Dacca is still being evaluated. Queen type 3 lbs. Plants also suffered from the winter. Sweet but a bit acidic, due I think to condition of plants prior to fruiting.

Sugarloaf is no longer being grown. Fruits were small and although sweet, lacking enough acid to be flavorful.

Natal Queen: 3lb. fruits that are sweet with exceptional flavor. Almost crispy fruit texture makes this variety one of my favorites.

Sarawak: 3 to 3 1/2 lb. fruits with flavor that rivals Natal Queen. Also a favorite.

Elite Gold: No longer being grown. After eating Natal Queens for the last 20 yrs. Its hard for me to eat any Cayenne variety. Even if they are sweet, they are always too acidic for my taste.

Agree!
I seem to really like any pineapple that has white flesh.

Returned home this week and had several pineapples to try. Thought I'd post a few pictures of the mature fruit. A few friends stopped by today so I cut into a Natal Queen for them to try. We all agreed that it was the best pineapple that any of us had ever eaten. Can't wait for another one of those to ripen!
