Sabal and other palm stem size
Howdy y'all! I always see pics of Sabal palms and some have very long petioles and others have really short ones. I love the long ones and would like to know if you can do that yourself or if it depends on the species. Is it shade or sun? I heard Sabals and Trachys are more compacted and have smaller leaves in full sun and have larger leaves and tend to be more loose in shade. I would really appreciate it guys. Thanks!

Sure it depends on spicie but sun/shade plays major role in final apperance.
This is T. fortunei growing in almost full shade I admit that this looks awesome but in large group of plants. Single plant with leaves like this will look sick to me  . Well, thats my opinion after all

<-thinkin Ante like collecting palms.. You know they have a phoenix Sylvesteris Robusta (hardier than sylvester) that has fatter trunks and jumbo dates :^) for zone 8 & up

I started with Palm fever, but then i got really sick with the Musa fever.
 Nice Trachy ! I never saw it with large leaves of this size ! I didn't knew that the difference could be this huge I have different Trachycarpus in my garden. I have 4 fortunei. Those 4 fortunei have all different leaves. I'm in love with Trachycarpus specie. They are very tolerant, not only for cold, also soil and different light conditions. You can even grow it easily indoors in a pot if you would want to do that. They are a real champion in our climat, passing winters with almost no leafburn. Anyway I'm pretty sure that there is much interspecie variation ( even in the Trachycarpus type, but this information speaks against that ). If it would mainly be about extern factors like light. Very interesting information !

Do any of you guys know a Sabal palm with long petioles about 5' or higher with leaves 5' or wider with no or little trunk (or slow to grow a trunk)? Similar to this PlantFiles: Picture #1 of Bay Palmetto, Thatch palm (Sabal yapa) This isn't a must but i would prefer drooping leaves like a livistona chinensis. This would really help! Thanks!
