Thread appreciating Randy's Palm protection!
http://palmtalk.org/cgi-bin/forum/ik...=ST;f=1;t=9255
Randy, they are Oohing and Ahhing over what you are doing with your palms! Take a look! "tHAT GUY IS INSANE! WE NEED HIM HERE!" "umm, WOW! Has he had sucess that way before? It seems to me, that cutting off all the fronds would not be a good idea! (except for washy's, they are fairly hardy and fast) " Well done, Randy. |

Re: Thread appreciating Randy's Palm protection!
Lynn,
Make sure you study up on the different types of palms, which I know you probably will. Here is a link to give you a little info on the hardiest types... Here is a quick reference: http://www.sepalms.org/Hardy%20Palms..._Reference.htm Here is a little more info on cold hardy palms: http://pubs.caes.uga.edu/caespubs/ho...almreader.html |

Re: Thread appreciating Randy's Palm protection!
it is a big ole wopping 28 * f in the big old spartavegas tonight.its an icy cold, its bone chilling! i feel sorry for you guys in fl. how are you taking precautions with 13 acres of nanas and cyads? let alone any that dont usually require to much protection? do you wrap them or bag them or just leave them and see what the outcome will be? ive seen some of the protection methods, but how do you cover that many things in just a few hours?

Re: Thread appreciating Randy's Palm protection!
32 F. here, thats the warmest its been in five days, yesterday when I left for work at 6am. it was -4 been warming ever since, 7 inches of week old snow and now we're looking at 40's 50's the next three days with rain,(get rid of the snow cap) then 30 will feel warm, when the sun comes out, odd weather, yes , but ,thats Northern Illinois, 4 seasons every year, though sometimes spring and fall only last a few weeks, Then it gets really hot or really cold, thus my pots for my plants, Best wishes to all

Re: Thread appreciating Randy's Palm protection!
Thanks! I am sure you know how it goes, I did not plan to have so many plants in my house. In that photo in additon to the palm is: Cycad, Cannas, elephant ears, dwarf cavendish, Christmas cactus, bird pepper.
I have no idea what the tall, leggy pink plant is though. Hopefully its not too toxic as you can see in one of the photos, a cat has chewed one leaf? Anyone knowwhat the pink plant is? |

Re: Thread appreciating Randy's Palm protection!
it looks like a plant i saw at lowes last nite...the name? according to lowes intelligent marketers it is called... assortated colored foliage...i hate it when they do that. yours has a lovely color and the height is nice, it looks better then the one at lowes did. i started with one nana tree...im having to go get some shelving today just to keep the plants off the floor. so i understand the crowing aspect. lol. what kind of cat do you have? i wouldnt let him eat your plants it could be bad ju- ju for him. my cats are not allowed in the nana room. cats and dirt dont get along. lol. plus i have datura and im trying angles trumpet from seed and all parts of those plants are poison.
