![]() Good evening Dean.
My farm is on an island on Florida's SW Coast. There are many Mango farms there, and it is where Florida's first commercial Mango groves were started, before Dade county production began. ![]() |

![]() Squam, excellent avatar. ;D
Caloosa, how big is your mango farm? Just a few trees here and there or large systematic production?

![]() Today as the other day, I planted unnamed cultivars. If they do not have the charactoristics or close to it that I am looking for, I will top work them into a more preferred cultivar.
The seeds I picked from several trees of known commercial types that were near other cultivars of known type. I planted over 100 seedlings. they have been growing for several years now. I cull them by cold susceptability, by crown rot, scab, powdery mildew, and anthracnose resistance. I have two that are already flowering. Most of their charactoristics should be close to the parent tree, while fruit charactoristics will be considered most. Shelf life when picked "Mature green" is important. I expect about 25 percent to meet planting requirements. Even less to be commercially acceptable. I hope this answers your question Squam256. Jackdaw, I have over 1 hactare(2.5acres), or 3.2 acres, over twenty Mango trees planted. My aim is improved cultivar production, over fruit production. I have many more bananas planted there. I keep the property "wild" for the gopherous polyphemous, a Threatened species. The concept of my Ecological agriculture comes from the Mayan "Petkot" concept. It is agriculture that does not damage the ecology of the site. I have many "indicator" species such as Barkers tree Frogs, and endangered plant species I protect on the property. I will not list them here. We hope to pick up some ajoining properties after we build our house. ![]() |

A number of named mango varieties have originated on Pine Island, including Bailey's Marvel and Cogshall. There's others that I just can't think of. |

![]() Yes I know the cultivars the seed came from and the cultivars of the nearby trees.
In my experience it takes about 7 years for seedlings to begin to flower. But many have done so sooner. The are many more than those two, but some growers do not wish to release their cultivars, and some have. The Honc Cambodiana is a good one, Estella, Sunburst, and an unnamed Marval are others. The unnamed Marval is a seedling that is not harmed during cold spells when most of the other trees are. It also tastes good with no fiber, and is slightly smaller(most of the time) than Kent. ![]() |
