![]() They will form full sized bulbs if they are planted outside in garden beds, but I haven't tried them indoors yet until now.
All I know is that they need a dormancy cycle after they sprout a little bit to vernalize and store up the growth hormones to flower and generate a bulb. I have over 2000 garlic cloves out in the garlic beds now so I took some of them inside just to see if they can form bulbs under a south facing window. Here's the latest garlic thread. ![]() Sowed some - strelitzia - Mandela's Gold seeds today, see how it goes, not the best time of the year to start seeds in my area. Figure since they take so long to mature and flower I would try and get a head start. : )

![]() You can make the bulbs bigger by fertilizing them heavily, but you should still get good production even without it. I generally use organic sources such as tree leaves, grass clippings, free horse manure & home made compost to make sure I have very good soil in my garlic beds. I don't have to fertilize them to get reasonable sized bulbs however garlic seems to be one of the easiest plants to grow and do respond noticeably to fertilization.

![]() Onions probably need even heavier feeding and more watering with very loose loom soil and they are much pickier than garlic about their growing conditions if you want them to reach full size. Onions are also prone to onion maggots as well as many fungal diseases so they are harder to grow.
