Xanthosoma Atroverins in SE TN
Just took a couple of pics of my Xanthosoma I planted this past spring... overall they have out performed my expectations by a "country mile"...
Here they are as of the first week of July... And here they are as of today: (5 gallon bucket in 1st pic for scale) The overall height of the largest one from the ground to the top of the tallest leaf is 83"... I finally have about 6 pups sprouted up out of the ground!!! Just thought I would share the pics and highly recommend these babies to anyone that loves aroids!!! |

WOW! That is huge, may have to consider it for next year, congrats!
What is the tall palm in the picture? Wish I could do that here! ~Joe |

Re: Xanthosoma Atroverins in SE TN
Hey Joe,
The Xanthosoma atroverins are really awesome... They have to be about my favorite ee I currently have growing.... I do have another 4 varieties of ee's that I just got a few weeks ago that I think I will really like... They will not go out in the ground until next spring... As far as the palm in the background, it is a "hurricane cut Sabal palmetto that I got this past spring and it is really doing well also... The two smaller palms on either side of the palmetto are Butia capitatas (aka jelly palms)... I just planted them out this past spring also. I do have a Butia that has been outside at my place for 3 years now and is starting to send out a bloom... A little late, but at least I know it must be happy... Thanks for the compliments on the ee's... Randy |

Re: Xanthosoma Atroverins in SE TN
Randy , great looking plant. I have the xanthosoma sagittifoliumhttp://www.agristarts.com/xan_sagittifolium.htm
I did not post a pic of mine becase it's very small , I got it at a nursery on the Outer Banks . The nursery guy had huge ones for sake with loads of pups . I had no room in the car for a huge one , so I just talked to him about exotic gardening here and in Europe and in the end he dug a pup off for me , very cool. I also have the Xanthosoma violacea , it's small too but I hope to have pups from it next year. I love these plants more than Colocasia at the moment , I think next year will be a Xanthosoma and Alocasia year for EE's . I'm still working on Colocasia 'Jet Black Wonder' this could be a very good plant but I need to get it growing better than I have . Colocasia 'Miranda' looks good when big , but some of the others like I'm not so sure about yet. Anyway thanks for posting the pic. Later Steve

Re: Xanthosoma Atroverins in SE TN
Hey Steve,
Thanks for the response... I do have a question for you... Your reference to Colocasia 'Jet Black Wonder', is not what some call 'Black Magic' is it? I know 'Black Magic' use to be called this, but from what I have seen the other 'Jet Black Wonder' has the white veining in the leaves... If yours in the one with the white veining in it, when it pups, let me know and I am sure we can work out some sort of trade. A couple of weeks ago a few friends and I ordered a couple of flats of various ee's from Agristarts and the ones I have are really starting to take off. I got a couple plants each of the following: Alocasia wentii portadora Colocasia affinis jeningsii black marble elena nancy's revenge Here is a quick list of what I have now and would be happy to trade with you sometime... colocasia fontanesii Black Magic and Illustris colocasia esculenta ruffles Colocasia esculenta violet stem |

Re: Xanthosoma Atroverins in SE TN
Randy , my 'Jet Black Wonder/ Midnight' seems to be an improved form of Black Magic . The JBW is very very black on the stems and has a more velvet texture to the leaves than Black Magic.Almost all my Colocasia are from Brian's Botanicals ( Aroidgrower ) and he has the best stuff and the largest collection on the web . JBW has not done well for me , my fault because this my first season in the US I messed up some things and not putting enough Perlite in the Colocasia pots was a major mistake. When I get a pup I'll send you one but I guess it will be late Spring. No white veins on my JBW , here is the plant at Brian's http://www.briansbotanicals.net/cata...df2630d9a6cb13
The Colocasia's I grew this year are 'Midnight/JBW' Fontanesii Illustrius Pink China Miranda Royal Hilo Hilo Beauty Black Runner Big Dipper Illustrius Black Beauty Esculenta 'Blue Form' So Randy it looks like we can trade a few when the time comes and cover all the bases . For those Lurkers out of the trade loop , Brian's Botanicals all the way , he delivers Later Steve

Re: Xanthosoma Atroverins in SE TN
Hey Randy. I'm a bit late on this thread, but have been busy recently.
What is the plant on the far right of your pictures? The one with the palmate leaves? Is it a manihot? |

Re: Xanthosoma Atroverins in SE TN
Mustang, yes, indeed, it is a Manihot grahamii. Good eye... It has been out in the ground year round for 3 years now and dies back each winter. This is by far the best growth I have gotten out of it. Seeded heavily this year!!!
