Aaaaah!!
I help out at an animal charity that castrates/ neuters street dogs and cats and strays, and then returns them to where they were found. We also neuter and doctor dogs and cats for poor people who can't afford to pay, to try to keep the local population healthy.
On Tuesday they brought in 10 3 week old puppies whose mother had been killed on the road on the previous Thursday night - imagine!! They were in poor condition - starving, wet and filthy - amazing that they were alive at all. So we fed them, warmed them and washed them, and today they were looking so much better and didn't stink - before the flies were all over them - just horrible. Now they are starting to look fat and smell sweet like puppies should. So much work to feed them all by hand - but when they are older we will neuter them and try to find homes for them all - hopefully not too hard as they are some sort of rottweiler cross. I'll get pictures next week when they are looking better! |

Re: Aaaaah!!
So does that organization also capture homeless people and castrate them? J/K J/K....I dunno...I realize that they are trying to keep the stray animal population controlled/healthy...but it just sounds cruel to capture random animals, castrate them, then release them.

Re: Aaaaah!!
Yes Bryan - keep away!!
Well - if you saw the street dogs that are skin and bone, and exhausted by having endless puppies and not enough food - you would see our point of view. This way the population is happier and healthier, and the feral packs of starving dogs are no more - a big change from 5 years ago. Also there is more chance of finding loving homes for the few puppies in the rescue centre when they have been neutered. They live a better life this way - there are a couple of street dogs that we have treated that are now disease free and live at the gas station, and they come running over to have their bellies rubbed. My husband always says - "Oh, 2 more of yours?" Believe me - it is a GOOD thing! (Mind you there are a few people I would like to have the vets attend to!!) |

Re: Aaaaah!!
Thanks Bob - I think I got a bit too heavy there - but I feel really strongly about it. We also help the thousands of impoverished Haitians who come across the border - Dr Bob (another vet believe it or not) holds medical clinics free of charge for them and we help to supply food for them - often our bananas as we have a constant supply (more than we can eat) and I would rather pass them on to them, than friends who can afford to buy their own fruit. The DR is inundated with needy Haitians and in direct opposition to the media reports, makes a massive effort to support and help them, but many Dominicans are poor too. We put several of our gardeners children through school, and make sure they have shoes and books - just a drop in the ocean really. Luckily I have the time!

Re: Aaaaah!!
Ditto!
I knew of a guy who lived in Texas who shot stray dogs from his apt. window. What a jerk!

Re: Aaaaah!!
Cassie,
You go girl!!! Keep up the good work! I also do rehabs and rescues(wildlife, domestic, and exotic) but our vets are not so giving, in fact... Not at all!.... I spend ALOT more than my husband would like on spays/neuters and medical attention for the strays. The only difference is we usually end up keeping them untill a suitable home is found... I'm glad you can help out both the critters and the people!! Best wishes for a Wonderful Christmas!! Sue |

Re: Aaaaah!!
Thanks Sue, Mushtaq, Patty, Stumpy and Bob - didn't mean to get on my soapbox or give myself a pat on the back - those 10 puppies made my blood boil! Frog - I will get some photos next week when they should be looking better.

Re: Aaaaah!!
Sadly - over the holiday period 9 of the 10 died because they were too young for the inapropriate food they had been given before they were rescued.

Re: Aaaaah!!
Oh how sad! What was the "inappropriate food" they were given?
At least you tried.

Re: Aaaaah!!
That sounds like a really good program Cassie. I have to say, I read a book called "Collapse" a couple years ago that looked at the causes of civilizations that had collapsed.. Domican Republic was given as a current example of a country that is doing the right thing to protect forest, reefs, and the environment in general--in contrast to Haiti--where the difference is visible on Google Earth as a green/brown line across the island.
