Unhappy Chilean Earthquake: Tsunami warning

Have just heard that potions of Hawaii will be evacuated starting at 6 a.m. Hawaii time. Not sure exactly how close Gabe is to the coast, but if he's in Honolulu like I think, he could be affected. Please keep him, along with all the residents of Hawaii and Chile in your prayers. I heard on CNN that a tsunami has already hit Robinson Crusoe Island earlier today.

Heard from Lorax and she is good, said they didn't even feel it where she is in Equador.

My daughter's friend in Hawaii lives on the coast and said the warning siren went off at 6am to prepare to evacuate if need be.

We have a friend's son that is in Chile and they haven't heard anything yet as to his safety.

Just got this message from Gabe:

Hey Brent,
Nothings supposed to happen until about 11am, all is fine now but they've sounded sirens and are evacuating the coastlines. Where I live is supposed to be safe (about 1mi inland and high enough up), but I'll probably take a hike up one of the nearby mountains to get a good view. It should be an interesting day!

Cheers,
Gabe

Wow...is the world falling apart? Seems like these major disasters are happening more frequently than usual. Let's hope this one doesn't fall into the category of 'major disasters.' My best wishes to anyone around this earthquake or tsunami. Let's hope any damage is minimal and lives are spared. At least they have time to evacuate, though.

Maybe FINALLY Mother Earth has decided that we crossed some sort of "hegemonic mankind line" and it's time to fight to deserve the place on the Blue Planet.

I wouldn't be surprised if some wankers went into streets claiming that it's global warming or "2012 Doomsday" related.

It's just been a bad year in tectonics. All those regions (Chile, Japan, Haiti...) are tectonicly very active areas, this would happen (and will happen) sooner or later (again).

I feel sorry for people living in those areas, who lost their relatives or are still in danger. Let's hope that there will be as little casaulties, as it's possible.

Just happend to think about Dr. Nelson (also a member here) from the University of Hawaii. Let's hope he get's to safety as well. It sounds like everyone in Hawaii has had plenty of notice to get to higher ground.

Hawai'i is far enough from the epicenter, so they've had enough time to prepare. Something that Chileans and Robinson Crusoe Islands didn't have. Was there a statement as to how fast the wave is moving and how tall it is in the highest point?

I heard that it could be moving as fast as 500 mph, which just seems impossible, but that's what they were saying on CNN. They also said it wasn't very high at all (centimeters only) as it traveled across the open ocean. Apparently, it really only builds in height as it approaches shore. Luckily, from what I heard, Hilo was only hit with a 3' wave and a few hours later the tsunami warning was canceled. Looks like Hawaii got lucky.
