Thumbs up Graveyard Deer!!!

Kind of cheering on such a sad visit to the cemetery where my brother is buried, are the beautiful deer that live in the nearby woods…

It’s nice to be able to get so close to them…

Wouldn’t Bob be so jealous?! He spends all day up in cold trees, hoping to catch just a glimpse of a deer, but I’ve got them posing for me!

The cemetery is called "WoodLand".

More soon…

Graveyards are a peaceful place that allow us to visit with our departed loved ones. I have always thought of it as a place to enjoy quiet solitude with those who have left us. It allows me to bring back the memories of when we were togther. I often think of them but at their grave site it seems to be more intense.
Thanks for the beautiful photos.

They do know the spots to hide in. If they wander about it is for sure they will be in someones sights. Nice looking antlers also, so that makes them a very interesting target.

I must admit Alex, although they're cute, they can be little buggers!

One day my mom and I put a beautiful large pot of chrysanthemums on the grave and came back a few days later to find that not only ours, but every pot of mums in the entire cemetery, were stripped bare of the flower tops! Only the stems were left.

It didn't take us long to figure out who the munchers were either. Needless to say the greenhouse across the street from the cemetery is losing a lot of business, as people are now resorting to artificial flowers.

I'll get more shots each time I return, although sometimes I forget the camera. You're all very welcome for the pics.

Hiya Re: Graveyard Deer!!!

Sorry about the glowing eyes but it was my flash. I took these shots this evening...

This time I brought 5 bags of apples with me and fed them all up good before bed! It was so amazing and they would have ate from my hand but my mom was afraid and wanted me to just throw the apples their way...so I did.

It was such a unique and great way to spend part of my evening...walking around the cemetery, feeding the deer my apples. I loved every minute of it.

I'm gonna return again this weekend with some more goodies and I wondered, other than apples, does anyone know of other things deer like to eat? I know they like the flowers we leave on the grave!

I wanted to bring some more grub for them and wondered what they might like. This one looked she was kinda smiling at me...

I'll get better shots when I return. My main goal tonight was to feed them.

You might try some popcorn. I know hunters will set out deer corn and my horses love popcorn. My horses love bread too, you might try that!

I guess they like carrots too, but prefer them shredded. I was doing some research. You are right...they love corn!

Angry Re: Graveyard Deer!!!

Yup, some renegade is actually hunting these deer! And if they're caught, they're going to jail for a very long time!

My mom and I made some calls today...even to the police and the London Free Press newspaper. We also called the cemetery to let them know too.

OMG something else just occurred to me! I don't recall seeing a buck anywhere in sight the last three times I've gone to the cemetery!!! It seems there are only does and fawns!

Good Lord, maybe the bastard's freezer is already full of the meat from the bucks!!!

Why would the bucks be gone away from the rest of the herd?! I'm gonna have to talk to Bob. He'll know about this kind of thing.

Come to think of it, I haven't seen a buck in months!!!

Oh I feel so sick just thinking about it.

Joy Re: Graveyard Deer!!!

Ok I spoke with Bob...

He said it could have been a neck shot wound but not necessarily, because it also could have been inflicted by a buck during the rut or even a very bloated infected tick. It could have also been an old arrow wound because a gunshot in the neck would have killed it likely.

He also said that it's sad to see an animal suffer and that it's good I made some calls just in case.

My first thought when I saw it was an arrow. An engorged tick can make hair swirls like that. They are pretty bad on wild animals too.

Some of those young ones are little bucks I think. You can see the horn nubs in a couple of your shots if I am not mistaken. I think they loose their horns at some time around January and February and grow them back every year. Squirrels and rabbits eat them in the winter time. I'm trying to remember things DH has told me. Bob I'm sure can tell you a LOT more than I can, but that may be why you don't see any racks right now.

I'm feeling relieved the more I'm learning. I've really been worrying about those deer. I like to bring them apples when I go because I feel guilty taking their pictures and not giving something in return. They're just such graceful and beautiful creatures. These ones are so domestic and tame, and they look at you expectingly. I think a lot of people feed them when they go as well.

Thanks for the information, Janan.
