Choose your plants .
Many can be found online and in big box stores. These choices are for an outdoor terrarium. This is a perfect uplift to a dark winter or a lasting gift. Terrarium plants that work by Hostafarian, on Flickr Last edited by cincinnana : 12-10-2020 at 07:37 PM. |

This is the tiny dwarf red.
The plant was going to be a hydroponic grow. The size is 1/2 quart...so it it small. But now it is in a taller style terrarium. Twins ..... by Hostafarian, on Flickr |

Re: How to: Terrarium
I have 6 terrariums. Some are generalist terrariums some are mist chamber terrariums set up specifically around a single plant. I have one set up around a Philodendron furcatum, a rare high altitude Philodendron. And another set up around an Anthurium splendidum. I do not know how to post photos here anymore so can't post pictures of them

Re: How to: Terrarium
This is my simplest and a favorite terrarium style.
It is a repurposed plastic jar. This can be used for any plant you wish to grow. As your level of interest with terrariums expands so does your desire to do something different and up your game. A sealed jar is one of the easiest ways to propagate ferns from spores. This makes for an inexpensive terrarium growing experience. After sterilizing the soilless mix in a microwave oven and a small amount added to the jar it is then "dusted" with the fern spore of your choice and then sealed until the lenghly growth process completes. There are some great internet videos which can get you on your way in no time. These plants were removed from the container hardened off and planted in the shade garden and then the process is started over with another variety of spore. Ferns which have been in this sealed jar for 17 months. Grown from spores. by Hostafarian, on Flickr |

Re: How to: Terrarium
Vintage brass props can be used as a focal point in your new terrarium project.
I chose dolphins because they remind me of the bronze roundabout sculptures in Florida. Other ideas are sailfish, galloping horses, turtles, and stingrays. Dolphins are brass..... soaked in vinegar and salt mixture to create an aged look. Once the patina is set after a few days the finish can be worked to the desired coverage. Re: How to: Terrarium
A few of my terrariums have bases that can be switched out for another look or planting interest.
The planted bases are bottoms of 5 gal buckets cut to 5 inches and planted with a variety of terrarium adaptable plants I removed a moist tropical base and put in a desert themed one with some cactus. This one is very low maintenance for the summer. Substrate is an Al's gritty mix and lighting is a 7 watt led. Lights on for 15 hours a day. |
