Oh no!!
Another bad storm heading our way - should strike by tomorrow midday. We will just have water in the road but the people in the mountains will be badly affected - we all pray for them as they have not yet recovered from TS Noel. We will be sending aid to the affected areas. A good site is http://www.stormcarib.com/. But the nanas will love it if they are not blown over!

Re: Oh no!!
Very late in the season for us but there is often a sting in the tail! Not too bad so far and the nanas are in good order, but I don't think Olga is here yet. The rain will be the worst thing as we will be in the NE sector which carries all the wet stuff. The waves are very high and the police and Red Cross are evacuating people living near the beach. We are 700 metres away and you can hear the roar! Stops life from being boring doesn't it? lol!

Re: Oh no!! Olga!
Well, it's dark o'clock and we are out with the mop and bucket. The flyscreens on the east of the lanai have blown in and we are about 2 inches deep in water - but the winds are very strong and I expect the tall nanas will look shredded in the morning. All towels are pressed into service!! Just to make everyone in the cold zone feel better!!!! lol

Re: Oh no!!
Not as bad as I expected - the tall nanas are shredded and the big heliconias and other tall plants took a battering but all things considered - not bad. 4.2 inches of rain and cold today - 77f and the dogs don't want to leave their beds!
Jim has just been down to the nearby beach with the dogs and there are trees down everywhere, and the standing trees have no leaves left on them. We have been without power since 4pm yesterday but the internet works!!! Last edited by island cassie : 12-12-2007 at 12:07 PM. |

Re: Oh no!!
im glad to see that you still have internet. lol glad you guys are ok. there calling for possiblity of snow here sat and sun. yeah!! not. i dont blame the dogs for not wanting to get out the bed. if it was 77 degrees here in the winter i dont know what id do. for the last couple of days it has been 70 outside. everything is sooooo confused. it even got the blacksnakes moving.

Re: Oh no!!
Yes Daen - here in the north of the island, Olga was worse than Noel. Thousands of people have lost everything and most of the deaths occurred when they had to open the Tavera dam floodgates to stop it from bursting. They warned people but they wouldn't leave. Those of us who are fortunate have been bringing clothes, food and drinking water to the areas nearest to us. Luckily the villages near to James' finca (pics in my gallery) get free clean drinking water from his streams, but other flooded areas have dead animals floating etc - horrible and very dangerous.
Sadly these two storms will set the country back a couple of years - just when it was starting to recover from the Baninter Bank collapse. There has been great damage to the rice, plantain and banana crops - well to all the food crops really and at the moment prices are almost double which makes life hard for the ordinary Dominican. But people are helping each other and employers have given out the Christmas bonuses ahead of time. Soon it will stop raining and when the sun shines things will look better for everyone!
