Very interesting! Maybe if they sold that in the stores, I'd make more rice. LOL. Thanks for sharing that article.

Red face Re: Rice

My concern is the taste of the rice; it won't be the same without cooking. I grew up eating rice three meals a day before I came to the U.S. The best rice I had back home was the one grown by my grandfather; he was a farmer and grew rice all his life. Even the smell of cooking freshly harvested rice will make me hungry back then when I was a kid.

My wife does hybrid rice research. I'll send her the link and see what she thinks. The rice her company produces (under the brand Rice Select) tastes wonderful. After eating this I will never eat Minute Rice or Uncle Ben's again. It is an aromatic rice that smells and tastes great. Rice Select is sold at Wal-Mart, Kroger, and several other stores.

Smile Re: Rice

I do remember Kroger and Wal-Mart sell sushi rice, short grain rice that come in 5 lbs and 20lbs; the rice bag shows a pretty red flower. It is THE BEST short grain rice I had in the U.S. I wonder whether Rice Select is ithe same rice or not.

Yeah, I do agree that flavor is important. I don't believe this will sell well in many markets if the flavor isn't up to par...but it might do well some places. Either way, it's a very interesting thought to have rice that doesn't require cooking!

Flavor will be more important in places with electric power where cooking is easy, but in communities that are still cooking with wood fires and, especially where wood is hard to find, flavor will be less important than the fact that cooking is not necessary. It could mean a lot in those places.

So does that mean china will gor a forest? lol I don't think rice has to be flavored that's why its cooking. Hot tap water you can mix in anything or cook your flavoring.. Me I am not one for artificial crap. :^)
