Default Santa Barbara wildfires

Well after 8 days, 9000 plus acres burnt, 78 homes destroyed, 22 homes damaged, 30,000 people were evacuated, 3,014 personnel on scene, 239 engines, 88 crews, 3 air tankers and 9 helicopters. The fires are now 80% contained. We were evacuated last Thursday evening at 2:00 AM. It is eery when the police drive down your street at 2:00 AM with loud speakers saying this is a mandatory evacuation, get out now! We had 100 degree temps and 60 mile per hour winds. We are on the coast. We rarely see 80's. it was snowing ash! We are safe! I wanted to Thank Harvey and Mitchel for calling me to make sure my family and I were safe. Rick also e-mailed me. How cool is that! I really appreciated it. It has been very stressfull as this is the fourth fire in the last 12-months. I am getting tired of evacuating. Hawaii here I come! Oh, the chickens were evacuated with our cats. They are part of the family as well. We are back in our house. The ash is everywhere.

Thank you again!!!!

I lived in Cali when I was younger. The fires then were nothing like they have been the last few years. Do you think it's because the brush hasn't been cleared properly, or global warming, or both? fantastic pictures you took.

I was actually a firefighter in those younger years near Mt. Palomar, so I really know what you're going through

Wow, they could use the one of the airplane on the news! I am glad that you and your family are safe as well.

I found this site
842,000 acres are lost each year to major fires
The past 2 years have been higher, 2006 was really bad

National Interagency Fire Center

Forests used to burn out on a reg basis. Brush & built up wood burned off naturally. Man has prevented this natural burn off, so the "fuel" has added up over the years. They did change the way they manage forests - not sure when. In some areas they now do controlled burns, but even those can get out of hand

Glad you're ok Andrew, and back at home.I remember when it was snowing ash in Simi when we had the fires here too.The air smells bad and it is hard to breathe when the whole town is in a black-out situation because there is too much smoke and ash in the air.I am glad that you and your family are safe as well with your return back to the house.

Andrew, great to hear that you and your family are safe along with your property and plants. Look on the brighter side, maybe the heat wave will give your 'naners a boost in their growth and fruiting. All the best and do keep us posted.

Thanks for letting us know you're safe. I'd say, with this year's and last year's fire seasons being as bad as they were, you need to consider Hawai'i seriously. It's only a matter of time until you come back to a heap of cinders, dude.

Andrew,

I've been thinking about all our members out that way. I had wondered once if anyone here had been affected but assumed no since no one had mentioned it. Very glad to hear that you and your family are well. I know that I'm not looking forward to hurricane season coming around again. Only about two weeks left and then we'll have to be on alert until the end of Nov. Take care!

I agree. We are planning to move within five years. The big Island is where we will live. We are considering the Hamakua Coast. 2 to 3 acres with a guest house.

I remember living in Cali when the people stood up to the state government and had the property tax lowered....am I telling my age?
Me and Nichole are also thinking of hawaii, or Washington state. I know, different climates...but we could just go either way on it.
