Re: Top 5 reasons people in Zone 5 grow bananas
I always grew bananas in zone 5 for the foliage! They're just beautiful plants....and they're fun to grow cause they grow so fast! Very charismatic (a trait you don't find in plants often LOL). The challenge was always there, but I wasn't trying to make them fruit...just loved the aura they instill in your garden (or in my room!).

Re: Top 5 reasons people in Zone 5 grow bananas
I'm in Zone 6 & never thought about trying naners until I found this site
Now I have 4 in pots & will try bamboo next year I'm sure I'll expand to other things that will grow in Zone 6 too I'm also thinking of building a insulated Winter box to house the banana in place for the winter. Like the one someone here had a pic - covered in snow |

Re: Top 5 reasons people in Zone 5 grow bananas
Yeah, I love to be that one 'CRAZY' individual growing bananas where they clearly 'don't grow!' Been doing it for years and plan to be 'that guy' for the rest of my life!

Re: Top 5 reasons people in Zone 5 grow bananas
Ditto, ditto, and ditto. I'm a newbie this year - hooked already. People locally think I'm crazy. I know better (sort of). This site has proven very, very helpful, so thanks to everyone. I can't wait to acutally get my nanners in the ground next year. It's the overwintering that has me worried. I'd hate to lose any of my new "family members." I figure two more weeks outside, then in we go. Still working on those details. Keep rocking out with your bad selves Zone 5 people.

Re: Top 5 reasons people in Zone 5 grow bananas
How depressing We are just now - this month, having a decent summer & in about 3 weeks gotta do a lot of digging up. My 45ft long "tropical Island" has a ton of brug blooms & nanas & Caster bean etc. It's a show stopper right now.

Re: Top 5 reasons people in Zone 5 grow bananas
Yeah, I'm kinda sad that my room is gonna get a LOT smaller in a month or so. But I'll have the coolest 'decorations' in my room BY FAR, so it's all worth it. I'll get to sleep with jungle leaves above me!

Re: Top 5 reasons people in Zone 5 grow bananas
I so dred this time of year, I know I need to re locate to a warmer place so it will be easier to get plants moved from outside to inside for this old gal but I have about 5 more years to go in the working world so......I just have to be determined to keep on working with these wonderful tropicals until I can make a change! The weather like Patty said in this part of the country has been wonderful these last few weeks, the Banana's if you listen very carefully have been chanting WOOHOO on a daily basis hate see it end!to

Re: Top 5 reasons people in Zone 5 grow bananas
Also a bonus on Zone 5 is that in some sense you have an excuse to buy more plants next year without overcrowding the place. My logic thus far is that if my bananas don't overwinter, I can buy new ones to replace them. If, however, my bananas do overwinter, then I have proven that I they manage and I can buy new ones since they won't die during the winter. So I think I will have to order some more bananas and grow them indoor for the winter and then they will either be additional or replacement bananas and somehow I can tell myself that it's ok because of the facts mentioned earlier.
