I remember 5&10 stores...
ALL THE CANDY!!!

Mike & Ikes, Hot Tamales, Good N Plenty, JuJubes, Bottlecaps, Pixy Stix, Nip & Sips, Boston Baked Beans, Whoppers, Milk Duds, Raisinets, SnoCaps, Fruit Stripe Gum, Zero Bars...Brachs Jelly Nougats, Neopolitans & Caramels...Just not the same anymore.

OH!!!! And let us not forget about:
Pop-Tarts, Twinkies, HoHo's, Raspberry & Buttercream Zingers(I make ones that taste closer to the old-time flavor than Hostess does), Little Debbie Yummies(no where near the texture & flavor).

Patty - I remember Cotton candy like it's supposed to be...Ohio State Fair, 1972...Mmm...(((Sigh)))

Miss the old IHOP pancakes...And Denny's breakfasts...we have both of the chains here - some things were just not meant to change.

I remember complaining when gas went up to 30 cents a gallon. Then I was totally shocked to visit Denver and find it was 70 cents a gallon there!

I remember walking down to the liquor store from grandma's house. (it was 3 miles outside of town and just down the dirt road from grandma's) Us kids were allowed inside...which wouldn't happen now...and we would buy penny candy...for, you wont believe it, a penny. We loved it. Heck, even when we didn't have money, we would walk down there and look in the dirt and bushes for money that people had dropped. We could usually find a few cents and would score on candy.

Back in the day, at least at our house, candy was not an every day thing. We went trick or treating, we got some candy in our stocking at Christmas, Baby New Year left the old candy orange slices, and the Easter Bunny left candy. Other than that candy was rare... except when we visited grandma and went down to the old 'Border Store'

I also remember people eating, and enjoying, some things that most today would not...like kipper snacks and milk bread.

Still, most of the memories especially those with food, are great. It is hard to find tamales as good as grandmas venison tamales. Mom's spaghetti and meat balls...with real meat balls, were always a favorite. ( I guess there may still be a bunch of ppl that still make meat balls. Maybe it is only me that is too lazy and settles for meat sauce.)

Homemade rootbeer, which was common for family get togethers was as good as it gets....heck, it still is. The same for homemade icecream.

I just ate a wonderful dinner of navajo tacos a couple hours ago...and this discussion is making me hungry all over again.

DITTO Aaron! We never ate candy or sweets except for holidays.
I clicked on the link showing Big Boy in Fresno & it was different than the ones around here. Didn't you have the fat boy out front with checkered shirt & overalls (I'm thinking??) & w/ a stupid hairdo like the new talk show host of Tonight Show?? (Oh shoot- what's his name), holding up a platter of a burger?
I also stole 2 ash trays from them that I still have...gotta be collecter's items now huh? Can't get over that you still have a big boy in CA!!!
Ooh, dunk those french fries in a side of their blue cheese dressing!
I remember a french man coming in & ordering a salad w/ "thousands of Islands" & Italian dressing. I tried it & it's really good!

Had the kipper snacks!! When things were tight - Mom would yank out a can of Ol' Jack Salmon...3 forks & we would feast!! Bones & all!!
Milk bread too...but only after pressing little pictures into the bread with a Smith Brothers cough drop!

there are more allowable food preservatives now then there was in the 60" sorry to brake to all you people that think Food is better for you now but its not the United States has last time i looked over 3000 chemicals and or processes that can be legally added to foods i remember having to mix the yellow food color in to margarine because it was illegal to sell margarine that looked like butter i remember gas wars you could get it for 15 cents on a good day i remember Cigarettes costing 35 cents Grape knee-high 7 oz cokes in a real glass bottle for 25cents a hamburger at McDes for 15 cents cheese was 5 cents extra bread was a 25 cents too portable record players 45RPM
8 track tapes real to real tapes that was vary high teck i remember AC on the car was an add on it mounted under the dash all chromed and shiny we never had AC in the house that was for rich people LOL every one had gravel driveways no one ever heard of Black top for a driveway i remember using cloths pins to put playing cards on are bikes to make that click sound we loved that
I had a Schwinn Buzz bike with a white banana seat my friends thought i was rich LOL thing wade like 80lb my bike i use now ways 18lb and theirs lighter bikes then that i remember having to light the boiler for the winter no auto pilot lights back then i remember going to the farmers market on Saturdays to get the veges for the week i remember setting down to dinner every night roast on Sundays or maybe chicken baked summer BBQ with the entier family all 100 of are local contingent no Cell phones to interrupt i remember every one talking for Hr about important and not so impotent stuff lively chats we all related to each other i remember that the only time we shopped was when we need something nun of this socializing at the mall we were never aloud to roam the mall by are selves my mother tot us how to act in public and if we misbehaved my motherer would punish us whens the last time you saw a Kidd get in trouble for bing disruptive in public we ate good home cooked food Breakfast lunch and Dinner oat meal for in the mornings i never even new was cereal was until i was a teen all in all it was a slower more family oriented time we entertained are selfs with what ever mischief we could find we played ball in the yard or went to the pool we did have that in the summers and i never would have asked my mother or father for some dome useless toy i was grateful for what ever my parents gave me i know that they worked hard for us and i loved them and Respected them the one thing i remember that seems the most important to me now is no one got up and cried in public or told a report how unfair there were getting treated we took care of things are selves and asked no one for help unless it was a family member we didn't run around with a personal sens of entitlement we knew that what ever we had we had to work hard to earn it and most importantly we were grateful for what we had because there were lots of people that didn't have as much as we did we never thought we would be rich thees are just but a few things i remember about way back in the Dino days sorry for the social bent but thees are more important to me that the computer and cell phones and all that nonsense

damaclese hit upon some of the greatest differences that I remember:

We were all taught sound principles. Honesty, integrity, hard work, respect, loyalty, self-sufficiency, etc.

Maybe dad would give you a paddling if you did something stupid, but that would not hurt as much as if dad said that he was disappointed in you.

Family came first. For us it was God, family, country.... It was important and a part of every day life. If somebody needed help, you naturally helped them..not for what return you might get, but because they needed help.

My best friends were dad, and my brothers. There were many others but they were those with whom I first would choose to do things.

There was no x-box, ps3, wii, etc., instead we worked hard and played hard. Almost everybody was fit. Obesity was rare (relatively), as were, diabetes, heart disease, ADHD, etc.

Mom cooked our food. She didn't buy a can of food and warm it up. She didn't open a box, mix it, then cook it. I have long attributed the health of our family to good and proper nutrition and a healthy lifestyle...and it wasn't because those were the fad...rather because we had a fairly large family and that is what we knew and could afford.

No Safety standards for Cars Millions of Americans died needlessly
Woman made half the money men did
A man could beat his wife with out fear of prosecution
Children could be abused and neglected and no one could do any thing about it unless the child died of it
we dint know about carcinogens or how they hurt are body's
we polluted the water throwe trash on to are grate land with out regard
the air was so polluted in some City's you never saw the Sun (LA)
Children died of Polio and pneumonia
the average 35 year old hand no teeth
most people had no health insuring and didn't go to the doctor
if you got Cancer you died
if you had a hart attack you died
if you were diabetic you die before age 40
the average life expectancy in the US was 68 (1960s)
Woman could never hope to be elected to any public office
only the riches 6% went to college
travel across country took a week
the Cold war (Need i say more)
fall out shelters
Duck and Cover (sheesh what were they thinking)
many times more Americans died of malnutrition i don't know the statistics on that one
theirs more but I'm depressed now!

Fall Out Shelters! Yes I remember them walking to school the signs were posted on a few big hotels in the area. It meant you could go there - in their basements, when the sirens sounded for a air raid attack! I was so scared!
I remember going to the store for my Mom, buying a gal milk & a loaf of bread & getting change back for 50 cents. No big supermarkets then - just a family run grocery store on the corner there.
Same time (I was 7 or 8) I was waiting for a bus on the corner to go to my Grandma's house. I stepped back against a building on a steel grate & my foot went thru the grate & my whole leg was in there. I couldn't get my leg out (I was very skinny). The bus came & went & there I was looking like I was sitting on the ground w/ one leg. It started getting dark out & I was crying but tried once more to get my leg out & finally did it. No one noticed anything was wrong & I never cried out for help - was too embarrassed or thinking I did something wrong. I ran home & my Mom freaked out thinking I was already at Grandma's house. She walked out to the ph booth to call Grandma & explain. There was a ph booth on almost every corner for the many ppl who didn't have a phone.
I remember my Mom shoveling coal in the furnace on cold winter nights & then again in morning. Oh shut up...bad memories!

I recall a book from a decade or two of you that left out the punctuation. Then the last few pages were rows of periods & commas, and... directions to put them where you wanted them.

That was the dairy industry's doing. They didn't want anyone mistaking that artificial product with real butter. Given how harmful trans-fats are, they may have been more on target than it would otherwise seem.

If you remember that yellow dye, then you will remember that it was called oleo back then, not margarine.
